Chapter 291

Translator: Yonnee

—

Yves Russell dismounted from his horse, his cloak billowing behind him. His voice, heavy with unfiltered rage, rang out.

“You conspired with the ‘dark sorcerers’, the deserters of the Magic Tower.”

Margaret, who was cowering on the ground, gaped in shock, her mouth hanging open in a most unsightly manner.

On the other hand, Zade couldn’t make sense of what the marquis was saying.

He crawled forward on his knees, pleading.

“Your Excellency, what are you talking about? Colluding with dark sorcerers? I know nothing of the sort!”

The marquis looked down at Zade with the same disgust one might have for a frog crushed under the wheels of a carriage.

“And what is it that you do know?”

“……!”

“This is the work of your clever wife.”

At those words, Zade’s eyes widened as he turned to look at Margaret.

Margaret, not to be outdone, glared back at him fiercely.

Yves Russell spoke again to the now cowering Zade.

“If you’ve been ignorant until now, there’s no need to learn more. You can share her punishment.”

Realizing Zade was of no help, Margaret slammed her hands into the dirt and screamed.

“Your Excellency, I truly didn’t know!”

This time, the marquis looked at Margaret with the same revulsion as one might feel looking at a rat that had ingested poison and laid out its innards.

“Didn’t know? Are you claiming you thought those suspicious men, cloaked in black and wearing masks, were some sort of righteous heroes when you decided to cooperate with them?”

“T-They told me they were working for Her Majesty the Empress!”

Underneath his disheveled black hair, Yves Russell’s eyes glinted.

He could see that Margaret’s desperate self-defense had a thread of truth to it.

But he concealed his realization well and continued speaking.

“Those men are traitors to the Magic Tower and Rafal. You will find no one else better at breaking oaths. Did you not find it strange that those masked fiends claimed to work for the empress, but not for the empire or for His Majesty the Emperor?”

Yves Russell bent forward, looming over the Tilrod couple as he spoke in a somber tone.

“The ‘dark sorcerers’ aren’t mere criminals. They have an evil purpose, one that aligns with the goal of toppling the empire. In other words, treason. And I don’t need to explain what happens to those involved in treason, as well as their families, do I?”

Margaret’s complexion grew paler and paler as the gravity of the situation sank in.

“T-Treason? No, absolutely not! I-I never had any such thoughts…!”

Her mouth spewed one meaningless excuse after another, while her trembling fingers uselessly scraped at the dirt.

‘Why, why did this happen?’

The marquis’s words rang true.

When the men in black hoods came to the Tilrod estate, if Margaret had claimed she hadn’t sensed anything ominous about them, it would have been a blatant lie.

However, at the time, Margaret had been out of her mind, suffering from both the humiliation she had endured at the Russell Marquisate and the back injury she had sustained after being pushed by Robert.

She blamed Radis for everything, cursing her eldest daughter day and night.

At first, the maids humored Margaret’s gossip to stay on her good side, but as time passed, they began ignoring her, and her bitterness deepened. It was in that state that the White Mask had approached her.

Margaret had accepted his offer without a second thought, knowing full well that he intended to harm Radis.

And now, this was the result.

Margaret began to curse, her words dripping with venom.

“It’s all because of Radis—that wretched girl who deserves to be ripped to shreds…!”

At that, Yves Russell drew his sword, enraged.

“Silence.”

“I gave birth to a demon! Ahhh…!”

Margaret collapsed, face down in the dirt.

Zade, watching her, still seemed completely lost—as if he understood nothing.

He clasped his hands together and pleaded earnestly.

“Your Excellency, I truly did nothing. I know nothing!”

Yves Russell closed his eyes.

The urge to retch overcame him.

For Radis’ sake, it would be right to execute these two here and now.

He could do it in this very moment.
