Chapter 279

At her words, Jade’s face twisted unpleasantly. Radis left him standing there and walked up to Flora’s house, banging on the door loudly.
From inside, a coquettish voice called out.
“Come in.”
Radis swung the door open with a loud bang.
“Oh my, you scared me! You’ll bring the house down!”
A woman wearing a starched apron emerged, her face startled.
She was Flora, the only florist in Willingham and Jade’s mistress.
Of course, in this small, impoverished village, it was unlikely that running a flower shop was particularly profitable.
While money may not have been the only reason, Flora had become Jade’s mistress and lived in this little village as though she were a lady of the estate.
Radis stared intently at Flora as she wiped her wet hands on her apron. This was the first time Radis had seen her father’s mistress up close.
She had expected to feel nothing but disdain.
Surprisingly, she didn’t feel much at all.
In fact, even the small amount of resentment she had carried seemed to fade away. Flora appeared that ordinary.
Her appearance was no different from the people standing along the roads of Willingham. She wore nothing more than a tattered apron over worn-out clothes, and her hair, unkempt, was a mess.
Her face was equally plain. Her elongated lower jaw looked stretched, and her chin jutted out, large and square.
There was nothing about her slitted eyes, flat nose, or thin lips that gave any hint of being a femme fatale capable of bringing a family to ruin.
“Oh my.”
Flora’s face showed a strange expression when she saw Radis standing in the doorway. It was a mix of surprise, confusion, and something quickly concealed.
She narrowed her eyes, attempting to feign friendliness, but the crooked smile on her lips was unmistakably a smirk.
“My goodness, is this the eldest lady?”
Ignoring the nauseating title, Radis spoke.
“It’s so nice to meet you.”
Flora’s face brightened as she grabbed Radis’s arm with her still-damp hands.
“That’s right! This must be the first time the eldest lady is seeing me in person. But I’ve always been watching over you from afar. You might not believe it, but I’ve thought of you as my daughter.”
The heavy scent of flowers and damp soil radiated from Flora, a smell that reminded Radis of a poisonous mushroom.
Disliking the scent, Radis held her breath slightly and responded.
“Is that so?”
“Of course. Who would’ve thought the day would come when you’d visit me…”
“I never imagined you’d think of me that way.”
Radis grimaced.
“It makes what I’m about to say much harder.”
“Oh, my dear, what could you possibly have to say?”
Not wanting to waste any more time, Radis cut straight to the point.
“Leave Willingham.”
Flora’s mouth snapped shut.
She glared at the dilapidated door frame and the dusty cobwebs clinging to it, as if they were the ones commanding her to leave Willingham.
Radis repeated herself.
“I want you to leave Willingham.”
Flora, still glaring at the cobwebs with her protruding chin, finally spoke.
“Do you hate me? Do you think I ruined your family?”
“…….”
“His heart was never in that home to begin with. It was always with me. You probably see me as the villain here, but you’re wrong. We’ve loved each other deeply for a very long time. From my point of view, it’s quite the opposite—”
Radis interrupted her.
“I know.”
“Pardon?”
“How could I not know why my father never cared for the Tilrod family? Is my mother that difficult to deal with?”
Radis continued calmly.
“I doubt anyone in this village is unaware of how I was treated in the Tilrod household. You know too, don’t you?”
“Ah…”
“I’m sick of my mother as well.”
Flora seemed to be trying hard to muster a look of sympathy.
“You must have had such a hard time. Oh, poor eldest lady…”
Cutting off her clumsy attempt at comfort, Radis spoke.
“I will become the head of House Tilrod.”
Flora’s eyes widened.
“Pardon?”
“With David deserting the subjugation squad and rotting away in prison, it’s entirely possible.”
“What—”
“My name will always carry the Tilrod name, and Willingham will always be attached to it. I find it all so filthy and tiresome. I plan to become the head of the family and clean this place up.”
Radis tried to mimic Yves’ sinister smile as she continued.
“The obstacle to me taking the headship isn’t my younger siblings. It’s my father.”
She spoke in a gentle tone.
“I’m not asking you to leave alone. Convince my father to leave with you. The two of you should leave Willingham together.”
“……!”
Flora’s pupils shook wildly.
“W-What? You want me to leave the home I’ve been living in?”
“You say you love my father, don’t you? If you leave this place, you can love each other freely, without anyone watching.”
