Adeline gritted her teeth and straightened her back.
“Where is the butler of the Zeller mansion? Bring him here immediately. There’s no way things could have turned out like this under his management. If it’s Carlisle—”
If it’s Carlisle, he would know the full truth of this situation.
Just as she was about to say those words…
A voice called out from behind her.
“I apologize, Milady.”
It was a voice so familiar, and therefore, even more dreadful.
“Everything Lord Millein said is true. The Zeller Duchy no longer exists.”
The voice of a traitor.
Downfall always arrives without a sound.
Adeline slowly turned her head to face Carlisle.
Each movement felt as if her body creaked with resistance.
It was her first time realizing how paralyzing betrayal could be.
And at the end of her gaze stood the man in a neatly pressed butler’s uniform, with his wheat-colored hair tied back, looking calm.
So horrifyingly calm in contrast to herself.
“…Haha.”
Adeline let out a hollow laugh.
Her stomach burned as if it were being seared by betrayal and despair, while her mind felt as cold as if ice water had been poured over it.
She was amazed that her eyes weren’t shedding tears.
Instead of a sob, what burst out of her mouth was a breathless accusation, filled with disbelief.
“Carlisle, did you really allow this? All of this? The fall of the Zeller Duchy?”
“…Yes.”
“How could you do this to me?!”
Adeline’s voice finally exploded in a shout.
“You know what I’ve endured! You know what I’ve done for this family!”
Adeline’s school days had been dazzling.
As the heir to a ducal house, with her beautiful appearance, noble conduct, and excellent grades, everyone admired her, and she had lived with pride in her background.
She had once sworn that even if she starved, she would never bow her head or bend her pride.
“I lived with a husband who insulted me every day. He even hit me in bed sometimes. But I endured it. I threw away my pride and dignity—you know that better than anyone!”
“Milady.”
“The Zeller Duchy is my life. It was my father’s life. It’s everything to me! And now it’s gone, wiped away without a trace, and you just stood there and watched, Carlisle?”
Was this anger, betrayal, or simply despair?
As Adeline cried and shouted her every grievance, Carlisle only closed his eyes tightly and listened.
Then he took a step forward and extended his hand toward her.
“…Milady, I can explain everything. I did it all, just for you—”
“Cut the nonsense!”
Slap!
As Carlisle stepped closer and reached out his hand, Adeline swatted it away harshly.
Her deep green eyes burned fiercely with rage and betrayal.
“For me? Don’t make me laugh. You did it for your new master, didn’t you? Go on, tell me. Was it Millein? Or Jack? Who is your new master?”
Her fierce accusations made Carlisle’s expression twist with complexity.
He reached out for her several times, but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to touch her and dropped his head.
“…Even if you no longer trust me, Milady, please know that Lord Millein and Mister Hatzfeld did it all for your sake—”
“That’s enough.”
Tap.
Jack’s shoe stepped between them, cutting off their conversation.
“It seems the butler has earned your hatred, so as the new owner of this mansion, perhaps it’s better if I do the explaining.”
“Don’t interfere, Mister Hatzfeld. Milady is under my care,” Carlisle protested.
Millein chuckled lightly and approached them.
“You’re all overstepping. I was the one who planned this, so naturally, I’m the one who should explain. The two of you can back off.”
With that, Millein took a step forward and extended his hand toward Adeline.
“Come here, Renée.”
In that moment, Adeline’s gaze shifted to the three men standing before her.
Millein, always wearing a gentle smile.
Jack, with his cold face and disturbingly persistent gaze.
And Carlisle, who looked at her with a slightly sorrowful expression, as if pleading with her silently.
