Silver Lining Yesterday - Chapter 25
“Why are you silent? You were so confident earlier. What’s the matter? The woman you wanted to peel alive is right in front of you, yet you can’t even curse her?”
Jean’s gaze faltered in confusion.
Trying to stifle a laugh, which leaked out despite his best efforts, Nix approached with a nonchalant attitude, slinging his arm around her shoulder. No matter how much Jean struggled instinctively, it was futile.
Nix leaned in so closely that it felt like he was going to kiss her ear, and his lips slowly parted with a mocking tone.
“Listen carefully, Jean.”
“…”
“Miranda is dead.”
The room fell silent as a grave stillness swept over it.
Nix’s fingers pointed straight at Gemma.
“That wicked woman dragged your precious Miranda Valentine to the gallows and beheaded her.”
For a moment, Gemma inhaled sharply. She dropped her cigarette in shock, and then desperately grabbed the armrest of the chair.
Meanwhile, Jean stood motionless, seemingly not hearing a word. Her eyes were fixed on Gemma, but nothing reflected in her blue gaze.
It was as though her eyes had become as opaque as a corpse’s, following the sinking of her consciousness into the depths. Her pupils tightened, consumed by the encroaching darkness.
But then, as though snapping out of a daze, her focus returned.
Jean mechanically lifted the corners of her mouth.
“I understand. I’ll find out for myself.”
Turning her head, Jean coldly brushed off Nix’s arm and walked away.
As her gaze swept across the room, her usual cheerful smile returned to her face.
“You all still like to play around, don’t you? Perhaps, even as you get older, you’ll never change. You know I’m not good at playing hide-and-seek.”
Under the dizzying chandelier lights, Jean wandered aimlessly, her eyes scanning desperately as if searching for someone amidst the sea of indistinguishable faces.
“But Nix, you shouldn’t joke like that. You keep being a thorn, and that’s why Gemma gets so upset. But Gemma, you’re the same. How could you fall for that ridiculous lie that I ran away in a love affair with Ernest? You know that Ernest and I are like family. If anything, I’m more concerned about how you ended up in that situation with him… no, never mind. We’ll talk about that another time.”
“……”
“So, where is Miranda?”
Turning back to the platform, Jean smiled brightly.
“Gemma.”
“……”
“Where is Miranda?”
Gemma visibly flinched, her body jerking as she clung to the backrest. Her red eyes were trembling with fear.
Unable to stand it any longer, Leroy stepped forward.
“Didn’t she just say she’s dead! Stop tormenting Gemma!”
“Shut up, Leroy Langdon. I’m talking to Gemma.”
With a sharp retort, Jean immediately focused her attention on Gemma.
“Gemma. Where is Miranda?”
Gemma, who had no further space to retreat in the chair, began to tremble uncontrollably.
Her usual stern demeanor crumbled, revealing her frightened, unguarded face.
“Bu…Butler! Head maid! No, Lord Percy! Capture that woman at once!”
“If you want, I’ll surrender willingly. But you have to tell me where Miranda is first.”
Unable to wait any longer, Jean approached with clicking heels, and Leroy hurriedly descended from the podium to block her way.
But Jean shoved Leroy aside without hesitation and fixed her gaze directly on Gemma.
“Are you still a child? Stop sending others and come answer properly yourself.”
“Capture her! I said capture her!”
“Deny it. Say you didn’t kill her.”
“Damn it, butler! Bring my sword! I want my sword—”
“Answer me, Gemma Heidegger—!”
A deafening roar erupted, sending shockwaves through the room.
The knights, who had rushed at her blindly, screeched to a halt in panic. Their swords that were drawn menacingly, trembled like a resonating chime before starting to explode one by one.
Like a chain reaction, waves of power spread throughout the banquet hall, suffocating the air with a heavy magic.
In an instant, the room descended into chaos.
The guests who had been dancing and tossing cards froze in disbelief and fled in shock.
The marble floor trembled like an earthquake, and a massive chandelier hanging with hundreds of candles swayed precariously.
At the exits, where crowds surged, a bottleneck formed, and screams echoed from all directions as people were crushed and trampled.
