Chapter 215

“Heaven bless the Saintess!”
Hearing the voices chanting in unison, Jace raised his head. Observing this peculiar situation, he looked around and then down at Irene, who seemed uncomfortable in front of him.
The questions he had been pondering seemed to peel away one by one.
But suddenly, a strange voice started to screech out, and thereafter, the ear-piercing cries and ground-shaking footsteps were familiar sounds from just a few hours ago.
Irene looked up at the sky with wide eyes. There, a swarm of winged monsters was gathering.
Jace quickly deployed his ability. A transparent water-like shield spread like a roof over the heads of the people. Simultaneously, the winged monsters began to descend.
Irene drew her bow and aimed. She hit the forehead of an eagle-like winged monster right in the center.
Kweee—
With a bizarre sound, one of the winged monsters plummeted. Fortunately, the people were safe thanks to the water barrier created by Jace. Then, various attacks on the monsters commenced.
The Espers and knights quickly vanquished the winged monsters. And with the crown prince’s ability, there were no casualties.
Irene wondered about the origin of this sudden swarm of monsters. Marco had said he heard no other sounds, so where did they come from?
“Huu…”
Jace exhaled deeply. He had never used his ability to this extent before. There had never been a need, so he was unfamiliar with its limits.
The sensation of his trembling fingertips was strange. He looked at his hands. Then, a fair hand touched his own hand briefly before letting go. He followed the hand with his gaze.
As Jace was still on his horse, Irene couldn’t reach Jace’s hand or grab onto him properly. Realizing this, Jace quickly jumped off the horse.
“My lady?”
“Excuse me for a moment, Your Highness.”
Not understanding her intention, Jace felt a warm energy flow into him as she reached out again. The trembling in his body subsided.
Only then did he realize he had overused his powers beyond his normal capacity.
“…How did you know?”
How did she realize a condition he himself was unaware of? In response to his question, Irene smiled faintly. How could she not notice the abnormal state of an Esper, having been a Guide for so many years?
“Isn’t that what a Guide is for?”
“Ah…”
“Protecting people with your ability is not an easy task. It might even be harder than attacking.”
She recalled the past. She knew all too well that protecting someone was more difficult than killing.
“…Is that so?”
“Of course. You know that too, don’t you, Your Highness?”
“…Hmm.”
Jace somewhat understood her words but couldn’t grasp them completely. As the crown prince of the empire, he understood the concept, but personally, as someone who had never watched over anyone, it was a foreign idea.
He looked at Irene with a sense of wonder, recalling the saintess, whose current location was still unknown. In comparison to the saintess, Irene’s superior guiding skills were so mesmerizing that he felt an inappropriate desire growing inside him.
So, he deliberately turned his gaze to look at the unharmed citizens, reminding himself of his duties.
Irene, too, glanced at the sky again while guiding. Ciel, who she half-expected to see in the air, was still nowhere to be found.
Where could he be?

14. At the end of greed lies destruction
As she had done before, Seo-yoon moved swiftly, checking her phone’s remaining battery.
Since she had been caught by Ciel, she was moving through dimensions before he could appear again. There were occasional dangerous moments with monsters, but she was getting better at timing her travels.
“Finally, S-Class!”
She cheered but quickly covered her mouth and looked around. Hiding near the capital’s walls, she was cautious of her surroundings and made her presence smaller.
She was startled to notice the number of Guides had increased while she was focused on dimension traveling. Then, seeing one particular Guide having the rank of SS-Class, she held her breath.
“What is this…”
SS-Class was a level unheard of, not just in Korea but in other countries as well.
“Impossible. How can there be such a rank?”
Seo-yoon calculated how many more travels she would need to reach SS rank and then checked her battery.
“Huh, only 8% left. No, I can do it. Two, no, three more times should be possible. Just quick trips.”
Although she had already achieved her goal of reaching S rank, finding someone of a higher rank made it impossible for her to be satisfied.
Her greed knew no bounds.
“This is my last chance. To return as Earth’s first SS-Class Guide. What does it matter what happens to this world?”
Her remaining conscience tried to stop her, but she couldn’t stop her fingers.
Seo-yoon hurriedly pressed the app and opened another dimensional door once again.
