Chapter 145

Ciel stepped out from Irene’s room and headed not towards his own room, but to the rear garden. Lost in thought, he walked aimlessly, watching the sun gradually set, stopping only at the far end of the garden.
“Phew…”
Only then could he take a deep breath. His startled body took time to regain its normal function.
“Haa…”
He continually replayed in his mind the moment he had just witnessed.
The way her usually reserved, fair face slowly flushed red, her steady, green eyes unwavering as they met his, seemed unforgettable, even in death.
It reminded him so much of the feelings that washed over him when he first met her. Although her appearance had changed since then, the intensity of her gaze remained unchanged.
Looking into her eyes, it seemed as though his unchanging wife still existed within them. When they first met, her gaze had been so intense it felt almost rude. Back then, her gaze seemingly held nothing but displeasure, but now he understood why she had done so, making it impossible for him to stay still.
“Haha!”
Unable to contain himself, he expressed his emotions openly. He felt so joyful that he could soar up and become a star in the sky if it were possible.
“No, what foolish thoughts are these?”
Unlike his previous life, in this life, he resolved to live happily with her until both their hair turned gray. Without worrying about monsters or the opinions of others, just the two of them living happily together.
No, they definitely would live that way.
With this firm resolve, he re-entered the mansion with a smile lifting the corners of his mouth. As he ascended to his room, he warmly responded to the greetings of the servants he encountered.
Despite the rumors that must have circulated about Irene, a few maids still threw flirtatious glances his way. In the past, he would have ignored them, but now it was different. He didn’t want to give Irene even the slightest cause for misunderstanding.
After changing into comfortable clothes in his room, he instructed Rouman, naming the maids who had flirted with him.
“Dismiss all of them.”
“Yes, understood.”
Rouman, aware of the servants’ behavior, promptly took action.
“Oh, Rouman.”
“Yes, Your Grace.”
“Ensure that all efforts are made to accommodate the Baron’s party.”
“Do not worry, Your Grace.”
“Good. Especially, make sure that no suspicious people will approach Irene.”
“Yes, Your Grace, as you command.”
Unlike the relatively peaceful outskirts where monsters were the only concern, the capital was a noisy place bustling with people. He didn’t want to cause even the slightest harm to Irene.
“Haha!”
His laughter was unstoppable. He drank cold water refreshingly and laughed heartily.
* * *
My family spent a very comfortable time at the ducal manor until the banquet.
I was pleased with the current situation, which had changed significantly from the coming-of-age ceremony. Especially, even if we hadn’t stayed at the duke’s house, our family had now gained enough wealth not to have to prepare uncomfortably like we did during the ceremony.
With the help of the ducal manor’s servants, we prepared for the banquet. After a bath and oil massage in the morning, I finally sat at the dressing table and finished my makeup.
“Miss, your dress is ready.”
In a brief moment of respite, I looked out the window. The sunset sky, tinged red, wasn’t much different from what we saw in my family’s territory.
Isabella seemed to be more skilled than I thought. Seeing the completed product, exactly like the design I wanted, cheers erupted among the servants.
“My goodness. I’ve never seen such a dress.”
“How could there be so much lace involved?”
“Though it covers up to the neck, the use of chiffon makes it feel not suffocating but rather subtly breezy and cool.”
I dressed up while listening to the chatter of the maids. I wore short finger loop gloves, just enough to cover my burn scars. Remembering Isabella’s suggestion to add a point to the cream-colored dress, she had prepared gloves in a color similar to my hair.
She certainly had a good eye for these things. The part covering from the neck to the upper chest, and the whole arm, was made of chiffon with rose embroidery. The skirt of the dress, which extended a bit more at the back, spread out in a wavy, round shape.
“Miss, these are the accessories sent over by His Grace. He said you can wear whatever you like from these.”
The dress itself was already splendid, so it seemed unnecessary to wear more. But since they were sent by him, I decided to look through them and found something that caught my eye.
