Chapter 102

Unable to wait any longer, I held my own wrist with my left hand and leveled them firmly. Inhaling shortly, I used my elbow to hit him on the side as hard as I could.
“Agh!”
Only then did his arms loosen. I rushed straight towards my parents.
“Mom! Dad!”
“Ahh, Rin! My daughter!”
Mom hugged me and burst into tears. Patting my head, Dad nodded.
“You did well, Rin.”
Hearing his praise, I beamed. But then, Mom raised her head and chastised him right away.
“Is that something you should say? It could have been a disaster! I can only be glad that His Grace came! I almost lost my daughter again!”
“Ke-hum, ahem. No, well, I can’t scold Rin. How can I scold my daughter for doing her best as a member of House Closch?”
“That’s a separate matter! I don’t know anymore!”
“Haha, my wi…”
Dad was going to get scolded no matter what’s he’d say. Wrapping my arms around Mom’s shoulders, I murmured to her.
“Mom, I’m not weak.”
I wanted to help Mom get over the past that she could not forget yet.
“I’m no longer a child.”
“Rin! Yes, I know that you’re right. But still, to say that what you did was reckless is an understatement.”
“Mom, right now, I want to protect you. I want to protect, Dad, Brother, too. And, as the fief lord’s daughter, I wish to protect our estate’s people, too. And, I will do so. No matter what you say to me, you can’t change my mind.”
Hearing the resolve in my words, Mom looked up. Her tear-stricken face was filled with both admiration and sorrow. Holding her hands now, I continued speaking.
“I mean to say… I just wish that we can move forward from the past together, Mom.”
Closing her eyes, Mom silently shed tears. Her shoulders trembled as she wept, and I embraced her tightly. Then, I heard whimpers next to me.
And it didn’t sound like just one or two people either. When I turned to look, I saw Dad biting his lips while holding back his tears. David was next to him, covering his mouth with one hand. The guards, too, were covering their mouths and looking at me with such respect.
Heavily embarrassed, I averted my gaze. But then, someone started to clap.
Clap, clap…
What started as claps that were few and far in between transformed into roaring applause in no time.
In an instant, the people who were clapping in droves shouted exaltedly.
“Amazing!”
“As expected, our commander’s family is just that different from other noble households!”
“We respect you so much! Madam! Milady!”
And, with a loud whistle permeating the air, they all expressed their excitement.
It was like the cheers you’d hear in a sports match, growing louder and louder. By then, Ciel stepped forward and spoke.
“Yes, as expected, a family with well-kept long traditions are different. I am once again in awe of House Closch.”
When the duke came forward, the cheering people became even more enthused.
“His Grace was incredible as well! Really, aren’t those skills unreal?!”
“How is it possible that His Grace picked up a monster so easily into the air and burned it just like that! He’s a real man! I think I’ve fallen in love!”
“If His Grace wasn’t here, the damages to our land would have been tremendous. Thank you! Thank you so much!”
As the guards cheered as well, even the residents who were hiding came out and screamed with joy.
I knew that it was a cause to celebrate, especially since we had overcome a monster wave with minimal damage, but I couldn’t raise my head out of bashfulness.
Somehow, it felt like I had a fever just by the temperature of my face alone. Then, David came up and messed with my hair.
“In the end, it really can’t be concealed that our family’s blood runs through your veins. Who else other than my little sister would be so brave?”
“Brother… Stop it.”
“Goodness. I should have looked into it ever since you started practicing shooting arrows by yourself every day. Ah, I feel a little sad. I know you’ll still be cute, but if you were my younger brother instead, I would have taken you under my wing and taught you all sorts of things!”
“You can still do that now though. Is there anything I can’t do just because I’m a girl?”
I would definitely prefer to be taught by him if possible. Then, I wouldn’t have to hide my training from the beginning.
At my comment, David burst into laughter.
“No, of course now! I’ll teach you everything!”
Then, Mom spoke sternly.
“Dei. Don’t push her.”
Even as Mom said that, it didn’t sound like she was completely against the idea.
I looked at her in surprise. Mom, who had wiped away the tear marks on her face with a handkerchief, spoke up again with a stern gaze that was no different from the usual.
“Before doing anything at all, you have to promise me a few things.”
In other words, she was giving me her permission. I hugged her immediately.
“Thank you, Mom!”
Now, I wouldn’t need to hide whenever I’d train. I was so excited to learn in earnest.
As Ciel had remained to the side until then, he approached us and furtively suggested.
“If that’s the case, then I can teach the Lady as well. What do you think, Baroness? Wouldn’t it be better to have someone by her side who can protect her perfectly no matter what? Especially since both you and the Baron will be busy for the time being.”
Ciel’s suggestion elicited vivid reactions from my family.
Mom’s expression shifted strangely.
And, both Dad and David started glaring at him viciously.
