“How did this happen? Did Stefan summon me this way? I came here accompanied by a man.”
Was this woman the usher? It was unacceptable if she was only trying to attract her in this way.
But Lina shook her head.
“I was in the underground warehouse and saw someone dragging the fainting Madam down the back aisle.”
“The back aisle?”
“It’s a passage through which theater workers and performers secretly move. It leads to a warehouse because of the stage equipment and other such things.”
Lina abandoned her duties and hid in the basement, listening to the show, when she witnessed two men carrying Claire and putting her in the wardrobe.
In fact, such a thing was not so uncommon in the opera house. The men were Thomas Borjans’ men, so she just had to feign ignorance and close her eyes.
However, she was very concerned that the wardrobe was the one she had brought during the day. Did Stefan give that woman to Thomas?
Stefan was a wicked man, but he wasn’t the kind who’d traffick people. Lina believed so.
That’s why she followed the way the wardrobe was being moved. She didn’t want to end up helping with a kidnapping.
“If there was a man, he would probably have been taken to the punishment room. See if you can get up. You have to go back towards the opera house. Where nobles come and go, Mister Borjans can’t move recklessly.”
Lina took what looked like a small pin from her pocket and wrestled with the doorknob.
Claire looked at her with bewildered eyes. This pretty girl seemed like she really had come to rescue Claire.
How she interpreted Claire’s gaze, Lina said, her face blushed red.
“Ah, please don’t think of me as a wicked person just because I know how to pick locks. The theater building where I worked before was old, so the doorknob was often locked. But they don’t give the master key to mere maids.”
Claire looked at Lina with a subtle gaze. She felt as if the talking, the chattering, was to put Claire’s mind at ease.
“Miss Lina, you must have worked in the theater for a long time.”
“Yes. I’ve been working since I was six years old. I heard that the former ballet director saved my grandmother from danger, and from then on, Grandmother continued to work in the theater. I also started running errands for Lord Stefan from a young age.”
“You’ve been working with theater companies almost your whole life.”
“I am just a servant running errands. I guess I was lucky in some ways.”
“In what way?”
“I like to listen to music. If I had been a maid elsewhere, she wouldn’t have been able to watch as many performances as I do now.”
Click.
Then, the door opened. Lina sprang up to her feet.
“Now, here.”
It was then.
Footsteps thumped from the ceiling. It was a warehouse with a low ceiling, so whenever footsteps sounded from the ceiling, the dust fell over Claire’s hair.
Fearing that they would make a sound, the two held their breath on the spot, unable to open the door.
“Couldn’t you just pretend you didn’t know?”
A loud voice came from right above her head.
『 That is Borjans. 』
Lina wrote those three words on the dusty floor. It was clumsy handwriting.
Claire didn’t know exactly who it was, but from Lina’s attitude from earlier, she could tell that this person was the boss.
Claire carefully, silently, lifted the loose rope and gave Lina a look. Lina wrapped the rope around her arms and legs loosely again.
She curled up again inside the wardrobe. It would be more dangerous for her if they’d find out that her bounds had been loosened. If she were to give them a false sense of security, she might just be able to buy some more time.
Lina covered the wardrobe and crawled to hide among the boxes in the storage room.
The ceiling door slammed open.
“Damn it. I couldn’t help it! It’s someone from Klausener! Stefan! Do you know what that bastard said to that woman? If you do something wrong, sparks will fly even to Iris!”
“Isn’t it just a matter of closing your eyes and acting like you’re innocent? No, we don’t even have to. We didn’t do anything much on our side.”
“Honestly, you care too much about County Schneider’s matters, Boss. No matter what kind of history you have with that woman there, it’s just strange.”
“Shut up!”
Thomas groaned.
How could these fools know his urgency?
Katya was still under suspicion. Perhaps Stefan saw it as an opportunity, he took the blonde-haired maid and made her loiter around in front of him.
Stefan knew nothing. He didn’t even think he had any evidence or anything.
The engagement party really had nothing to do with him. Perhaps the only connection there could be was that the ‘sedative’ that had been used in that glass of champagne was from in the back alleys of this opera house.
But the blonde-haired maid was a different matter. If she was Klausener’s woman, he would use her to get revenge on Katya.
Not knowing anything, his subordinates giggled.
“Sometimes, you act as if Miss Iris is your own daughter, Boss.”
“If she’s his lover’s daughter, then she’s his daughter. Don’t be so obvious.”
“Shut up your nonsense! Stupid mongrels!”
Thomas cursed again.
“Damn it, I helped because it was just a maid who needed to be cleaned up, what kind of sh*t is this!”
“Just deal with it as usual. It’s enough to hide it.”
The sound came closer and closer and Claire held her breath and closed her eyes.
She shouldn’t be caught. It should look like she’s really passed out, but she didn’t know if she could act believable enough because her heart was beating so fast.
Creak!
The wardrobe was opened.
“Ha, geez, f*ck!”cried Thomas.
The next moment there was another thud, as the wardrobe closed.
Gasp.
Claire let out her stopped breath. Her lungs felt like they were about to explode.
“That isn’t a handmaid— That’s the duke’s woman!”
“I will sell her right away.”
“What? Are you crazy!”
“Isn’t it the woman who gave birth to the Duke’s son as well as the owner of the Weaving Guild? She’ll obviously fetch a huge price.”
After the man who had dragged Claire said that, another man answered.
“You have to hand her over to another noble. Then we will take care of it so that we don’t get caught.”
“I’ll hand her over with the information about Stefan. Think about it. We don’t do direct dealings with nobles, if at all possible. If a noble comes to see, it must be about Stefan.”
