Chapter 85

[ Dad. ]

[ But was it so? Don’t you know? Our family originally cannot produce someone who can stand as Klausener’s spouse. Yet, the world has changed, and you are such a pretty child. If Duke Erich loved you, I would have gladly agreed. ]

[ Dad, you should be on my side. Why aren’t you on my side? Dad, you can’t do this. ]

[ This is the reality, Iris. I’m sorry. If I was a greater person, I would have sent a marriage proposal from our household to Duke Erich. But I’m sorry, my daughter, I don’t have the capability to do that. ]

In the end, he hugged Iris and apologized.

Even his own heart ached with pain. Born as the heir to Rommel’s traditional Count family, he never thought he was lacking in terms of status or money.

But he was heartbroken when it seemed that he became an obstacle to what his daughter desired most. It seemed to break him that she couldn’t even blame him.

He bowed deeply.

“I clearly told her not to go to the party, but it seems I had been too lenient. It’s all my fault because I couldn’t stop the child from doing nonsense. I apologize on her behalf.”

“Iris’s problem is not that important. It is already in the past.”

When Erich said so, Count Schneider flinched and shut his mouth.

He had known Erich since his childhood as he was a friend of his father, so he usually talked in casual terms to Erich. However, the way one speaks could not determine relationships.

Equality in a friendship was a mere illusion. Especially for people like Erich.

Even if House Klausener and House Schneider’s friendship had spanned for a very long time, it only meant that House Klausener had generously granted House Schneider that friendship.

So, in front of Erich, Count Schneider could not dare to raise his head.

“My fiancée won’t bear a grudge against Iris for something like that. Of course, this shouldn’t happen for the second time, but the matter has already been settled. There’s no need for you to bow your head like that, Count.”

Erich spoke calmly.

“The reason I contacted the Count was to tell you to deal with your wife.”

Count Schneider raised his head in surprise. A cold light shone in Erich’s eyes.

“What do you mean? No, no. She is careful. My wife is very devoted to Iris, so maybe she might have made a mistake…”

“Such an action could not be brushed aside as a mistake, Count. She bribed a maid and made her put a drug into one particular glass.”

The Count did not immediately understand the meaning of those words.

After a while, the blood drained from his face. Then his face turned bright red.

“Are you suspecting my wife?”

“…….”

“How could that be…!”

The Count cried out in a voice filled with all his anger exposed.

“I know that others say that my daughter foolishly adored the Duke and committed a mistake, and that my wife seduced me with tricks despite being of low birth.”

“Count.”

“But that doesn’t mean you can falsely accuse her like this! How can you falsely accuse her for attempted poisoning!”

Erich looked at the Count in silence.

Claire seemed to be convinced that they should look for solid evidence, but Erich did not have to. He was not the kind of man who needed to prove anything—he just needed to judge and punish.

If the motive he judged was certain, the culprit was also certain.

If marriage was the purpose, the opponent was clear.

Who was it who had spread so many groundless rumors and intertwined Erich’s name with Iris as a pair? Who had ever held the young noble ladies around their age in check?

However, Iris did not have the ability to carry out this case.

Thus, that left only the Countess.

All the more so considering that Countess Schneider wanted to ‘complete’ her daughter.

The Count’s complexion gradually turned dark red. Seeing his expression mixed with resentment and injustice, Erich was convinced that Count Schneider knew nothing.

“Since the Count has a very affectionate person, I understand that you trust and love your wife of seventeen years. But for Iris’ sake, please take a good look.”

“It’s not my wife.”

Count Schneider said stubbornly.

It wasn’t Erich’s business up to that point. He let out a short sigh. Anyway, he had no intention of using his own hands here to clean up Countess Schneider.

Cleaning up was a simple task for someone like Erich. But then, Claire would once again be talked about by many people’s mouths. Again. Perhaps the rumors would go as far as saying that she had retaliated against Iris’s mother because Iris herself had crashed the engagement party.

Erich now knew what kind of gazes were being directed at Claire.

He didn’t think she would give in to such things, nor did he think she was incapable of getting through this on her own.

Even so, if that were to happen, she’d have to bear the brunt of such judgment that she didn’t even have to hear if not for him. So of course, he would have to block as much as he could ahead of time.

He just gave a warning and moved on.

If it had been Claire who took the drug, he would not have stopped at only this.

But fortunately, he was the one who took the medicine. So he could turn a blind eye to this and focus on more important things for now.

“I will make sure that Iris issues an apology to Baron Delford. If there was a misunderstanding, my wife will do so as well…”

As Count Schneider trailed off, Erich spoke with a softened attitude.

“No, that wouldn’t be needed. Some things are better put away and forgotten.”

Even if Iris were to apologize face-to-face, Iris wouldn’t really understand her mistake. It would only hurt Claire’s feelings unnecessarily.

Count Schneider nodded his head.

“Yes. I will definitely scold Iris properly and ground her.”

“I want everything to pass as if nothing happened. Don’t forget that Klausener is protecting County Schneider, Count.”

Count Schneider took a breath.

“I haven’t forgotten.”

He said in a trembling voice. Erich nodded.

Then the butler carefully knocked on the door and handed over a small note.

『 The Baron has left the office. 』

Erich’s expression went tense.
