My Past Life is Riddled With Many Sins - Chapter 75
The line between professional and personal was terrifyingly clear with him. Even after serious personal quarrels, as a Chancellor, he consistently supported Yekarna with unwavering loyalty.
Yet acknowledging she was Yekarna’s reincarnation was a different issue altogether. Regina evasively ducked the question.
“Excuse me, what do you mean by that…?”
“Such evasion isn’t a good tactic. I’ve said repeatedly that Your Majesty is not skilled at lying.”
Before she could even respond, she was already being scolded. Regina grimaced, frustrated.
Lennon, her lover, could be the most friendly person in the world. But as a Chancellor, he could be unbearably harsh. Being hit for the first time after so long was more impactful than she remembered.
“With Margrave Linzmeyer, the Grand Duke of Eldenberg, and Prince Iskanda present at the academy, your poor acting skills would have exposed you already, if they haven’t just about done so.”
She felt as if her bones were about to break from his verbal blows.
“I will help you.”
He made a sudden offer.
“It would be a lie to say I never resent you, but as I said before, I bear no grudges, and I cannot leave you to be murdered by someone else in this life either. So, I will protect you.”
Regina was bewildered. She was used to his straightforward, overly efficient way of speaking, but this time, she needed more explanation.
Why no grudges?
When he said he wouldn’t leave her to be murdered, was he trying to imply that he was not the one who killed Yekarna in their past life?
Nevertheless, she couldn’t blindly trust him. Trusting him meant distrusting the other six.
Maybe he was the murderer in their past life, and his plan might be to gain her trust with sweet words before disposing of her again in this life… Yet despite her reasoning telling her to be cautious, her heart, as ever, wanted to trust him.
Just as she had trusted Prince Iskanda and Friedrich, wearing the ring and earrings they had given her.
Regina had many questions for him, but the most pressing was why he wanted to help her. However, she remained silent.
Asking him anything in this situation would amount to admitting, ’I am Yekarna’. Maintaining a confused expression was the best she could manage under the circumstances.
Yet, it seemed like this clever man could easily read her thoughts.
“Because I am your Lennon, Your Majesty.”
He smiled and whispered, before bowing politely as the music ended.
“It was an honor to be your partner. You dance very well, Miss Heather.”
Regina shivered at his parting words. She had focused on handling him, she had moved reflexively, without thought.
‘I should have pretended to be a bad dancer!’
It was her first time at a ball, yet she danced effortlessly like a native. Wouldn’t anyone find that suspicious?
Frustrated with herself, she was escorted back to her original spot as he gracefully departed.
“How was your dance with Count Hartman?”
“Is he even more handsome up close?”
Her female seniors buzzed with excitement. Regina realized then that Lennon’s reincarnation must still be unmarried. Even for a wealthy, handsome Count, such fervent interest from women suggested he was single. Feeling uneasy, she rubbed her neck.
‘I assumed he was married.’
In his 30s, by social standards, it would be odd to still be single.
Despite appearing to be in his mid-20s, Regina was convinced he was in his 30s. It was a gut feeling, unsupported by any concrete evidence. Yet her intuition was usually accurate in these matters.
Being sharp…. But it was somewhat different, but Yekarna also possessed such traits.
The notion of Lennon being older was strange to her.
While Prince Iskanda had been younger in a past life and older in this one, the age difference wasn’t vast enough to dispel the feeling of them being of the same age. But the cunning younger Lennon turning up as a firm elder figure felt peculiar.
‘A man ten years my senior is acting cute.’
….Oddly enough, it doesn’t seem so bad. In fact it was quite interesting. Of course, whether he would ever display such behavior was another matter. If it was true that he harbored no resentment towards her, she should be thankful for that alone.
As she awkwardly responded to a barrage of questions from her peers, Bliss appeared. He seemed to be walking towards her. An idea flickered through Regina’s mind, ‘Could it be?’
Knowing Skyler’s nature—someone who must do anything others do—he would feel compelled to secure a date if Lennon had one. A staunch believer in fairness, but only when it suited him. He detested reciprocating what he did for others to anyone else.
Given his past behavior, the reason for his approach seemed clear…
Regina gestured desperately for him not to come.
‘No, you can’t. You’re the Dean, and asking a student like me to dance would set the rumor mill spinning. Get a hold of yourself and turn back.’
But Bliss, impeccably ignoring her signals, came up to her anyway.
“Let’s have a dance, Miss Heather.”
His request felt less like an invitation and more like he was claiming something he believed was already his. Regina wanted to cover her face. Of course, if he complied simply because she asked, that would not be Skyler.
That would be some bizarre imitation of Skyler.
