My Past Life is Riddled With Many Sins - Chapter 62
Of course, fairness is fairness, but once they step into the arena, there’s no holding back. Having made it to the semifinals, she must have some skills. Getting overconfident could lead to trouble.
He planned to give his all to win. Then, perhaps handing her a handkerchief afterwards would leave a good impression.
Maybe she’d even fall for him. After all, no woman dislikes a strong man.
As Delon smirked, indulging in his fantasies, Regina furrowed her brows.
‘Why is he grinning like that? His skills aren’t even that great, and he can’t stay focused. His head’s not right.’
A sword is still a sword, even in a practice match. Just because it’s not sharpened doesn’t change the fact that it’s made of metal. Getting distracted during a match is unacceptable. If he doesn’t fix this habit now, he might end up losing a limb later.
She wanted to smack some sense into him, but she hesitated, worrying it might draw unwanted attention. Staying under the radar at the academy until she could leave was her goal.
‘No choice then. Hopefully, he’ll meet someone else to correct his habits.’
With nimble movements, Regina dodged Delon’s blade and launched a manageable attack, one he could defend against. She planned to narrowly win in such a way that no one would notice her too much.
After what felt like endless and boring child’s play, Delon finally seemed to realize something was amiss and his expression turned serious.
“Hey, are you actually…?”
That’s it.
Before he could finish his sentence, Regina thrust her sword close to his neck. He paused, his expression stiffening as he stared at her and declared,
“I lost.”
“I just got lucky this time.”
Her courteous response left Delon bewildered. He looked surprised and confused. ‘Did she really just beat me with luck?’ His logic sensed the truth, but his emotions refused to accept it.
Given the slightest doubt, his thoughts would drift that way on their own.
After rationalizing his loss, Delon became boastful and tossed out a remark, “Luck only works once,” before turning away.
Regina shook her head slightly and walked away from the center stage of the arena.
From a distance, she saw Professor Gunter slap the shoulder of a colleague in triumph. The person was presumably his rival who was teaching Delon. When Gunter’s eyes met hers, he waved.
Regina raised a finger to remind him of the promised 1 Mina. With a grin that reached his ears, Gunter nodded vigorously, signaling that he hadn’t forgotten.
Her objective was achieved, it was time to withdraw as planned.
Exhausted from the semifinal match and pretending she no longer had the strength to wield her sword, she decided to bow out.
“I’m sorry, but I think I won’t be able to participate in the final. I don’t think I can properly handle my sword anymore.”
She made her hands tremble visibly as she spoke to the event coordinator.
“I’d like to withdraw, where should I go to officially do that?”
“Hmm… you should speak to the dean about that.”
Regina was taken aback by the unexpected response. Why would Bliss, Skyler’s reincarnation, pop up now of all times?
“What? Do I really need to bother the dean over something this trivial?”
“The swordsmanship competition is under Dean Bliss’s jurisdiction.”
“He’s the dean and he has nothing better to do?”
She muttered this without thinking and then realized she had spoken aloud when she saw the coordinator’s surprised look. Quickly regaining her composure as if nothing had happened, she acted as if the coordinator might have heard a hallucination.
The perplexed coordinator pointed towards someone in the distance.
“Dean Bliss is actually right over there. You can go and speak to him directly.”
Regina instinctively followed the direction pointed out by the coordinator, finding Bliss seated in the stands. He must have already looked at this way. Seeing her, Bliss caught her eye and winked, causing Regina to jump and quickly avert her gaze.
Confronted with Bliss, she’d rather step onto the finals stage herself and declare a forfeit publicly. Surely they wouldn’t force someone who claimed to be too weak to wield a sword to compete?
Regina had been deliberately avoiding looking at the spectator section. The idea of facing at least two of her exes and a lover from a past life was more than she could bear…
The weight of the sins committed by Yekarna in a past life felt too heavy for Regina to bear. If she had wealth, she could have apologized with money. But she was a mere tavern keeper’s daughter.
That doesn’t mean she had complaints about her parents in this life. She was grateful for her peaceful family life, but it hardly equipped her to face the resentment of those powerful figures from her past. She had no choice but to desperately ignore them.
‘Hopefully, the terrible scenario that there are more of them here won’t happen…’
The idea of Lennon or Prince Rybnoy unexpectedly spotting her during the swordsmanship tournament made her shiver.
‘Surely no way.’
It doesn’t make sense that she had encountered three already in such a short time. What are the odds that there would be another? Even if fate hates her, it wouldn’t be so cruel. It has to be an irrational fear.
However, if she was to assume that all three were indeed watching, the one she needed to be most cautious of was Bliss, Skyler’s reincarnation. Friedrich and Prince Iskanda were not deeply knowledgeable about swords to the extent that observing her skills in a swordsmanship match would reveal her past identity as Yekarna.
But Skyler, or now Bliss, was a different story.
