My Past Life is Riddled With Many Sins - Chapter 135
‘It seems that past popes, despite everything, were generally good-hearted…’
After all, there were no Emperors in history who had disappeared and died.
At the same time, as Regina realized that she could end up in such a situation if Valenti changed his mind, a chill ran down her spine. She would have to accept what was given.
“You don’t need to attend to the meal; you may go and rest now.”
At Valenti’s words, the priest bowed politely and left. Unlike her, who had tried to escape and failed, the priest left the room without a second thought. As she looked at his retreating figure with a hint of envy, she heard Valenti’s voice.
“A kind person left behind plenty of information on the devilkin. Was that why you visited last night?”
“Ah? Yes.”
Regina, responding to his question, suddenly thought of a way to escape. She looked at him seriously.
“If you’ve seen it, you’ll know that the situation is dire. We need to prepare for the worst, and right now, I’m the only one who can sense the devilkins.”
The man in front of her had once been called a saint in his past life. A man whose personal feelings wouldn’t take precedence over the survival of humanity. No matter how great his desire for vengeance.
“I’ll pay for my sins later. So, if you could set aside your grudge for now and just let me go…”
“The sanctuary’s rules don’t allow exceptions, even for beings from the demon realm. The same goes for the Holy Ground itself.”
He calmly added, wiping his lips with a napkin.
“Even if the demon realm were to completely take over the outside world, you’d be safe in here. Why would I let you out? To save the people of the world? So you can go out and get hurt or die on your own terms?”
As he twirled his wine glass, he stared at her, and then a smile bloomed on his face, like a flower.
“Oh, Your Majesty… to think you don’t understand me this well. I don’t care if humanity is wiped out. As long as you and I remain in this world, that’s all that matters.”
The sound of a fork clinking against the plate echoed through the room. Regina had dropped the utensil she was holding, unable to distinguish whether she was in reality or caught in a terrible nightmare.
Bliss, Darien, Lennon.
The reincarnated versions of them were completely different from their past selves. Bliss, at least, was most like Skyler. But the others, Darien and Lennon, were almost unrecognizable as the reincarnations of Prince Iskanda and Lennon.
Darien, who she had once thought to be innocent and weak, was now sly and unpredictable.
Lennon, who she had assumed to be a fox-like younger man, now had countless faces.
To be precise, they hadn’t changed. She had simply come to realize the hidden sides of them in this life, sides she hadn’t known in the past. It had shocked her every time. But this… this was something else.
Friedrich Eldenberg.
A lifelong symbol of goodness and holiness, God’s son. A man so noble that nothing in the world could dare to taint him. A saint who treated all people equally, regardless of their rank or wealth.
She had thought that even he must have a hidden side. Like Darien or Lennon. But this…
‘He’s just angry at me.’
His anger toward Yekarna was so great that he was saying things to intimidate her, things he didn’t mean.
There was no way this was sincere. As she repeated this to herself, he got up from his seat and walked toward her. He picked up the fork she had dropped and placed it somewhere else, then handed her a new one.
“I thought you wouldn’t be surprised by this much, considering you’ve already seen the others’ true colors.”
She clenched her trembling lips and finally spoke.
“Friedy, I…!”
“I debated whether it would be better to keep up the illusion or to shatter it, but I decided to do as I please. You won’t turn away others just because you know, right?”
His fingers slowly brushed over the hand holding the fork, and he whispered.
“You accepted everyone else, so I’m sure you won’t refuse me, Your Majesty.”
As his fingers traced her skin it left a tingling sensation. There was no physical force restraining her, but Regina felt as if she were bound by ropes, unable to move. The light touch, as delicate as a feather, brought a strange feeling of weakness. As though her body was losing all strength without her control…
It had been the same with Yekarna. Even the invincible Yekarna had, for some reason, become powerless when she touched Friedrich. Even with the strength of a swordmaster, that touch was irresistible.
When he touched her, she felt herself tense unnecessarily, only to gradually loosen, as if her body had been given a sedative. It was a reaction she couldn’t control. And so, at one point, she had become obsessive about avoiding his touch. She wanted to try to hide what could be a weakness.
Valenti withdrew his hand, returned to his seat, and offered the food.
“If you don’t eat soon, the food will get cold. Please enjoy it while it’s still good.”
In the end, Regina barely ate anything. Seeing her lack of appetite, he tilted his head slightly and asked.
“Does it not taste good?”
“No, I just don’t have much of an appetite.”
He glanced down at the barely touched food and said flatly.
“I’ll leave the food here in case you get hungry. I’ll go pray, so feel free to rest.”
The door opened, but this time, unlike before, she didn’t attempt to escape. She knew it was impossible and felt there was no point in trying again.
Left alone, she sat on the bed.
“I don’t care if humanity is wiped out. As long as you and I remain in this world, that’s all that matters.”
“I debated whether it would be better to keep up the illusion or to shatter it, but I decided to do as I please.”
Valenti’s words echoed in her mind.
Regina thought back to the time when Yekarna had been alive.
Friedrich had addressed everyone respectfully. He had treated all people equally regardless of status, and who, despite never being officially ordained as a priest, was called a saint.
