Chapter 3.1

She was basically telling him to cut the wordplay and get to the real reason they were here. She honestly wanted to know how on earth the news of her engagement to Axion even spread in the first place.

At her icy tone, the man let out a soft laugh and nodded slowly.

“You’re right. It’s been quite entertaining, thanks to you.”

‘Hah—’

Evelyn rolled her eyes, barely hiding her annoyance at his nonsense. But then, the teasing look in his eyes completely vanished, replaced by a cold, almost sinister red gleam.

“Lately, the times when my magic gets tangled have been happening more frequently.”

She instinctively stiffened her expression.

“A-And so?”

“You know what happens around the time we come of age, right? The mark appears on the back of our hands.”

At those words, a troubling thought raced through Evelyn’s mind.

No way…

She glanced at the back of her hand with an uneasy gaze. For the past few days, she’d been feeling a throbbing pain there, as if a snake were coiling beneath her skin.

Even though nothing had appeared yet on her pale hand, she knew what that pain could mean.

In the Baltian Empire, it was common for a mark to appear on the back of the hand of those with special abilities at the age of adulthood. No one knew exactly why these marks appeared, but most believed it was some leftover trace of ancient, long-lost magic.

Sometimes, people with particularly powerful abilities would lose control, resulting in what was called an ability rampage, and that was exactly what happened to Axion.

As he grew, his magic had become unstable, and whenever he reached his limit, he’d end up confined to his room, unable to come out. The only way to stabilize that rampage was to form a bond, an imprint, with someone who had the same mark. Those who shared the mark could steady each other’s powers just by touching.

Evelyn’s own healing ability was another means to prevent an imprinted person’s ability from going on a rampage. By now, it wasn’t hard for her to guess what her fiancé was thinking.

‘This guy… Is he really thinking something that ridiculous?’

Completely exasperated, she shot him a wide-eyed glare.

“You’re not seriously thinking the same mark is going to show up on me, are you?”

Axion tilted his head slightly and responded in a low voice.

“Why not? What makes you so sure it won’t?”

“….!”

Evelyn felt a headache coming on as she listened to the shameless words of the man in front of her.

‘‘I don’t know, okay? Even if I did, I’d pretend I didn’t!’

She couldn’t even bring herself to look into those crimson eyes of his.

Even if her powers weren’t as unstable as Axion’s, she’d recently begun to feel her own healing ability become more and more unpredictable lately. It was just like how, before two people with matching marks imprinted, their powers would become hopelessly tangled the closer they got, almost as if they were craving each other.

But in the original story, Evelyn never manifested any special mark. Unlike Axion, who never found his imprint partner.

‘Yeah, that’s impossible. There’s no way something like that would happen.’

Her eyes darted nervously as she replied, her voice a little shaky.

“Come on… It’s not me. There’s no way a mark would ever show up on me, right?”

For a moment, Axion just stared at her silently before curling his lips into a sly smile. Evelyn swallowed dryly, bracing herself for whatever madness might come out of his terrifying mouth next.

“At the very least, I trust my instincts.”

Her eyes went wide at the absurd answer.

“So, you did all this just because of a hunch?”

He raised an eyebrow, as if to ask what the problem was.

‘…Ha, look at this shameless guy.’

What if their marks didn’t even match? Evelyn pressed a hand to her forehead, half in disbelief, half in frustration over her fiancé’s recklessness.

‘He’s going to get himself in trouble if he puts that much faith in his instincts.’

To have the mark suddenly appear just when the original story was about to begin…
