Chapter 6.1
Evelyn massaged her aching forehead at her fiancé’s ridiculous comment.
“Forget it. There’s no point trying to talk to you.”
Just then, a group approached looking for Axion, and she used that as her cue to step away. As she made her way toward a group of familiar faces, young ladies around her age greeted her with excitement.
“It’s been a while, Lady Inevasel!”
“It really has been a while, hasn’t it?”
Evelyn returned their enthusiasm with a bright smile. They were her old classmates from Roxen Academy.
They had always been close friends at the academy, where social ranks didn’t matter, but now graduation was just around the corner. With the coming-of-age ceremony approaching, they would all be returning to their real lives, and that made her a little nostalgic.
‘Moments like this really make me realize we’re becoming adults.’
Just ten days ago, they had still been cramming for exams together in the lecture hall.
While she was lost in the moment, a woman with a rather fierce expression came over to her.
“I heard the news, Lady Inevasel.”
‘Oh, right. She’s here, too.’
How could she forget someone who made such an impression?
Evelyn let out a small sigh.
The woman before her was none other than her academy classmate who had served as president of Axamo—the Axion Adoration Society—for three years at the academy.
Her devotion to Axion was worthy of a legendary romance, and she remembered being a little impressed by it. Though that was before this woman spent three years harassing her just because she was Axion’s fiancée… Truly, there was no one more ill-tempered than Maltiz.
Figuring she might as well play along, Evelyn put on a deliberately bright tone.
“What news are you talking about?”
“The announcement correcting the wedding news with the young lord. You must be so disappointed.”
The woman replied smugly, her lips twisting into a smirk. Her blunt remark caused the air around them to instantly go cold. Making a comment like that in public was clearly meant to humiliate her.
‘Tsk. Not being able to call off the engagement is probably my one real regret.’
Evelyn just nodded and flashed a sweet smile.
“Thank you so much for worrying about me, my lady.”
Then, she took the woman’s hands and shook them, making sure the bracelet Axion had given her was clearly visible. The rubies sparkled under the chandelier’s light, drawing all eyes to the jewelry. Sure enough, all the other ladies focused on the bracelet.
Maltiz’s face twisted in rage, and she slapped Evelyn’s hand away before quickly storming off.
‘Well, why did you provoke me in the first place?’
As she waved mockingly at the woman’s retreating figure with a faint smirk, a familiar voice cut in from behind.
“You seem to be enjoying yourself.”
Startled, Evelyn spun around to find a tall man watching her with his usual indifferent gaze.
“What? How long have you been there?”
“Just now.”
Axion replied calmly, but she suspected he had witnessed the entire exchange. The realization that he had caught her showing off the bracelet pricked her pride. Still, she kept her cool and whispered low enough for only him to hear.
“So? Why are you here already?”
Axion turned his head, his gaze fixed on something in the distance as he replied calmly.
“My parents just arrived. They want to meet you.”
Evelyn followed his gaze. There, at the center of the noble crowd, stood the Duke and Duchess Valentino, commanding attention with their undeniable presence.
Just seeing their imposing presence made her swallow nervously.
‘I can’t help but feel nervous.’
Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward alongside her fiancé.
