My Contract Husband is Going Crazy Because of My Iron Wall - Chapter 52.2
Chapter 52.2
My shocked gasp left Jade frozen in place. I had just assumed he would only share secrets with Catherine and wanted to keep things discreet… but what was he talking about?
“Ah… you didn’t know? We agreed to keep it a secret for now, given the tense atmosphere in the mansion after His Excellency’s trial… I’ve a loose tongue, it seems.”
“I thought you and Cathrine were just close colleagues. When did you become a couple?”
“Well… Cathrine confessed her feelings to me right after we returned from the north. She said that thanks to you, she realized she’d been smiling whenever she thought of me, and that she finally understood her own feelings. I’ve liked her for a long time.”
“Oh, really?! No wonder you two seemed strange!”
Wow, my intuition was right for once! Maybe my gut feeling wasn’t completely off!
“Yes… that’s how it happened.”
Jade scratched his head shyly, and I playfully took credit.
“If Cathrine realized her feelings because of what I said, then I played Cupid, didn’t I?”
“Yes. Both Cathrine becoming my lover and His Excellency’s acquittal are thanks to you. I want to express my sincere gratitude and also… apologize for my previous misunderstanding.”
Jade suddenly grew solemn, going so far as to kneel.
“Viscount Mute! What are you doing? Get up!”
“Please, call me Jade. My title is just an empty shell.”
“Just get up, Jade!”
At my insistence, he quickly rose.
“Thank you. I actually sat down rather hard, and my knee was starting to hurt.”
“Oh… right.”
“Anyway, as promised, I’ll be eternally grateful and at your service. I’ve been at His Excellency’s beck and call for years, so I can handle anything you throw at me.”
“In that case, I won’t hesitate to put you to work. Can I give you an order now?”
“Ah, right now is a bit… I’m supposed to meet Catherine soon. Could I start serving you in, say, thirty minutes?”
“….”
I shot him a pointed look, my bright smile carrying a silent reprimand.
Jade wisely backed down.
“I’m joking. Please, give me your command.”
“Buy Cathrine a bouquet. And always say kind and beautiful things to her.”
“My benefactor is truly a kind soul.”
“I try. And…”
I wiped the smile from my face.
“I’m going to stay away from Reinhardt for the rest of our contract period. Can you help me leave his side?”
* * *
Camilla was handing over her duties to Reinhardt, and I was assisting them with paperwork.
Knock, knock.
A knock came from outside, and Jade entered the study.
“Madam… Count Vrellod is here.”
“What? Without any notice? That man has lost his mind.”
Camilla, after her icy remark, suddenly pulled out a mirror and began checking her hair and clothes.
“Let’s go to the drawing room.”
She dashed out, her face oddly flushed with excitement, and Reinhardt and I followed, bewildered. In the drawing room sat a large, jovial-looking man.
“Wife! Do you know how much I’ve missed you?”
As if Reinhardt and I were invisible, Count Vrellod rushed to embrace Camilla the moment he saw her.
“Goodness, what are you doing in front of the children?!”
Camilla shrieked, swatting Count Vrellod’s back with her fan, though he didn’t stop his affectionate assault.
“You promised before you left the estate, wife! That you wouldn’t be angry if I held you all day to make up for the time we were apart!”
“That was just to appease you because you were crying! Did you really think I meant you could hold me all day? Let go!”
“No, I won’t. I’m going to kiss you too!”
Camilla, who had been glancing at us nervously, paled.
Count Vrellod… to make Camilla look like that. He must be the only person she couldn’t handle.
“We’ll… we’ll get back to work!”
I quickly ushered Reinhardt out of the room for Camilla’s sake and burst out laughing as soon as the door closed.
“They’re quite the affectionate couple.”
I knew they were close, but seeing it in person was even more heartwarming than I’d imagined. Would Reinhardt and Lucia share a bond like that someday? And would I be there to witness it, just as I was now…?
The thought brought a bittersweet smile to my face.
Noticing my expression, Reinhardt, who had been watching me intently, asked.
“Why do you look sad?”
“Oh, it’s nothing… just envious.”
“….”
Reinhardt was silent for a moment, lost in thought, before speaking again.
“Should I… call you ‘wife’ too?”
It wasn’t exactly what I wanted…
“Wife.”
However, the way he said it, so casually, so possessively, pleased me.
I found myself nodding in response.
