Chapter 98.1

“I think I’ll hold a ball.”

I’d drifted off last night waiting for Kairos. Lately, sleep had been coming unusually easily.

‘It’s a nicer place than I expected, but I’m not exactly at ease.’

What was more, monstrous beasts had appeared five times in the past fortnight. That was a lot, even for the North.

Every time I brought up joining him on patrol, we ended up arguing, so I’d give up. However, if things got any worse, I planned to go out even if he tried to stop me. Now that I was part of this story, I didn’t want to see anyone sacrificed, and I wanted to help, but Kairos kept blocking me.

‘I could definitely be of use to him!’

So, I’d planned to bring up the ball and try to persuade him… but why was I so sleepy?

Today, since Kairos was staying home, we went out together, partly so I could see the surroundings. Although I’d wanted to go out alone, every time I tried, he’d tag along, and I also wanted to finish our unfinished discussion.

“By yourself?”

“Yes, I spoke with Mrs. Tene yesterday. I meant to tell you last night, but I couldn’t.”

“It’ll be a lot of work. Just have someone do it. That’s how it’s always been done.”

“That’s because the Duchess has been absent until now. Word has already spread about me, I can’t just ignore it. And I’d like to try my hand at it.”

I almost said I would fulfill my duties properly during the contract period but stopped myself. It would only start another argument.

“If you want to do it, then do it. Tell me if there’s anything difficult. I’ll help you prepare.”

“You too?”

“You think I’d let you struggle alone?”

At his tone, which implied it was out of the question, I scoffed.

“Thanks, but I’ll just be giving instructions anyway. By the way, you’ve been going on patrols quite far lately, haven’t you?”

“…Something like that.”

Kairos nudged me further inwards as a carriage passed by with the clatter of hooves.

“As I said before, how about we go together?”

His brow furrowed in displeasure.

“Hazel, we already talked about this.”

“But there are so many now. If we weren’t married, I’d be out here subjugating them around this time anyway.”

“Still no. The North isn’t so weak that I’d risk your safety.”

A cart driver hurried past, and Kairos moved a little closer to me.

“I think His Highness the Crown Prince would laugh if he heard that. He knows my abilities.”

“Protecting my wife is my duty as a husband.”

“You’re overprotective.”

I turned my head away after saying that, and we were already entering the bustling streets.

‘I thought there seemed to be more people.’

“Did you come out often when you were in the territory? Uh, I mean, before we got married.”

“Not really.”

“You didn’t go out?”

“Barely. Only when necessary.”

“What an unfaithful lord.”

“But didn’t I seem like a faithful husband?”

“How did the conversation get there?”

“I want to look good to you.”

Speechless, I nudged him with my elbow instead of replying. I turned my head to the side, hearing his low chuckle.

We were already in the heart of the bustling streets. Come to think of it, even though it was quite crowded, I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all. Naturally, my eyes went back to Kairos. His gaze met mine immediately.

“Why? Are you uncomfortable?”

“No, not at all.”

There was a reason for my comfort. Kairos’s attention was entirely focused on me.

‘It’s a little confusing when he does this.’

“….!”

It was a fleeting moment. I felt a sudden, piercing stare directed at me. I quickly turned my head toward where I felt it, but with so many people around, it was difficult to find the source.

‘Someone definitely just looked at me.’

It wasn’t murderous intent, but it was certainly an unpleasant gaze.

‘Was it my imagination?’

I felt a similar stare when we first got out of the carriage and started walking.

At first, I wondered if someone recognized me as the Duchess, but it didn’t seem like that. As I pushed aside the uneasy feeling, I turned my attention to the stalls selling goods, hoping to end my first outing in the North on a pleasant note.
