Marriage with a Suspiciously Demure Husband - Chapter 110.1
Chapter 110.1
The magic circle reacted to magical energy. I channeled dark magic into a section of the circle. If it were a true magic circle, not just a doodle, it would respond to my power.
As I poured my magic into it, like watering with a kettle, a faint red band began to glow along the lines of the circle. Absorbing my magic steadily, the circle pulsed with a dark crimson light.
Once I’d channeled all my power, I slowly rose. The faintly shimmering magic circle lost its light.
“This isn’t a functioning magic circle.”
But it had definitely been active at some point. The question was, what kind of magic circle was it?
Kairos couldn’t use dark magic, so who created this, and why was it here?
I pulled the carpet back completely, revealing the floor beneath. The moment I saw it, I covered my mouth with a trembling hand, forgetting it was covered in dust.
“Why… why…?”
In the center of the magic circle… was the Cultist symbol. Why? Why was the same symbol Fay Martin hid on her neck here?
A small noise from outside startled me. I quickly covered the circle with the carpet again. A moment later, Hizan entered.
“The Duke has returned, My Lady.”
“Oh, I, I’ll be right out.”
After checking that the carpet was properly in place, I hurried out. I locked the door with the key, handed it to Hizan, and left the storage room with him. I felt all the blood drain from my face.
Why, why was that symbol there?
I cleaned myself up as best I could and went to the bedroom to wait, still reeling from the shock. I was trying to calm my breathing when Kairos entered a while later. Seeing me still awake, he smiled gently.
“Why aren’t you asleep?”
I stared at Kairos, speechless. I wanted to scream and ask him why the Cultist symbol was inside his mansion, if he knew about it.
But would he even know?
“Hazel?”
“Oh, nothing. I was just waiting for you so we could go to sleep. Was everything alright?”
“It’s all taken care of. Couldn’t sleep?”
If it wasn’t Kairos, it was unlikely a servant would have dared to draw a magic circle beneath the storage room. Perhaps it was his parents? Still, could his parents wield such power?
Kairos never spoke about them, making it difficult to guess. It was clearly an advanced, layered magic circle. If a renowned dark mage had created it, I surely would have known.
Why the Cultist symbol? Was it somehow connected to his strained relationship with his parents?
My thoughts swirled and tangled. At some point, Kairos had come to bed and was half-lying beside me, watching. His expression asked why I wasn’t lying down.
“No, I’m going to sleep now. Kairos…”
“Yes?”
What should I do?
I was too afraid to ask. I thought our relationship was improving… but I felt like I was about to shatter the carefully assembled puzzle pieces with my own hands. I wish I hadn’t seen it. Why did I have to go down there?
“It’s nothing. I’m going to sleep.”
“Come here. I’ll even sing you a lullaby.”
“…Am I Anne?”
“You’re my wife.”
In the end, I couldn’t bring myself to ask him before I fell asleep.
“My Lady, is the tea to your liking?”
“Oh, Mrs. Tene.”
I inhaled the rich aroma of the black tea, but my mind was elsewhere. Mrs. Tene had offered to brew it herself, so I was enjoying it in the greenhouse.
It was a rare moment of respite.
I knew Mrs. Tene had served Kairos’s parents as well as him, along with the current head butler.
Perhaps she had answers. However, what if my questions angered Kairos and he dismissed her? Or, worse, what if, contrary to all expectations, they were in league with each other? Would I have to use my powers and escape?
I didn’t use to be so hesitant and overthink everything. I was frustrated with myself for becoming more and more reluctant as time went on.
“Madam.”
“Yes?”
“Is something troubling you?”
Mrs. Tene asked gently, her face etched with concern.
“Mrs. Tene.”
“Yes, Madam.”
“You know everything about this place, don’t you?”
“Yes. Aside from the very top of the Duke’s castle, there’s nowhere my hand hasn’t touched, Madam.”
So that meant she knew.
“Would it be alright if I asked you about Kairos’s parents? What were they like?”
Mrs. Tene hesitated.
