Chapter 109.2

Their headquarters was located right in the center of the capital city. Now that we knew its location, we could raid it, gather information on the Demon King’s summoning, and apprehend followers and those who communicated with them.

Elcard was vast, but I hadn’t expected such audacity operating within the capital. This wasn’t in the original story.

As far as I knew, all significant events took place in the north. Come to think of it, it was strange. Why were the details so vague, given it was from the protagonists’ perspectives?

Major events were mentioned, but the specifics of their actions were lacking. It wasn’t entirely absent, but I seemed to know more now. Was my memory failing me? No. I remembered all the names…

Certain scenes felt vividly real, as if I’d witnessed them myself.

The descriptions were that detailed. Yet, the protagonists’ actions were presented in broad strokes, which now struck me as odd. Was it strange for me to be thinking about this now?

“Hazel.”

“Ah.”

Kairos’s forehead gently touched mine. My eyes widened as our noses brushed against each other. It felt like he was trying to comfort me, and I couldn’t help but smile.

As a soft laugh escaped my lips, Kairos finally pulled back slightly, a smile playing on his own.

“Are you very tired?”

“No, just reflecting on today’s events. Everything will work out, right?”

“Everything will work out.”

When Kairos said it, I believed him.

I hated to admit it because of my pride, but his persistent sincerity was beginning to break down the walls I’d built.

* * *

That night. A sudden appearance of monsters near the estate, coupled with Kairos’s absence, kept me awake.

“Ah, the basement.”

As I pondered what to do until Kairos returned, I remembered the basement storage room. I asked Hizan, who was still awake, to fetch the key. With the key in hand, I descended to the basement alone.

“I definitely felt dark magic here.”

I pushed aside the small items blocking the door and used the key. The lock was stiff from neglect, and I had to use considerable force to open it.

“Ugh, dust.”

I waved away the thick dust and stepped inside.

Old furniture cluttered the space, making it difficult to navigate, but the faint residue of dark magic was definitely present. If no dark mage was hiding within, the lingering power suggested a dark magic circle, an object, or a magical tool.

“…Where could it be?”

I rummaged through the furniture, hoping to find something before Kairos returned.

My search was fueled by anxiety. The day I sensed the dark magic here, I’d worried, despite my attempts to dismiss the thought, that Kairos might be connected to the cultists.

“It’s not here.”

An hour had passed. Despite my thorough search, I found nothing. I stepped back towards the door to get a better view of the room.

“Oops.”

I tripped on a thick carpet.

“….”

I paused, my foot still caught beneath the carpet.

I slowly slid my foot further under, then lifted it, attempting to flip it over. The floor underneath was scorched black.

“Fire…?”

Had there been a fire?

I bent down and, with some effort, moved the furniture off the carpet. What was I doing at this hour? There were drawers, and I was getting breathless, sweat beading on my forehead. Still, I managed to grab the carpet with both hands and fold it back halfway.

The entire floor beneath was covered in scorch marks.

I knelt down, running my hand over the blackened surface. The dark magic definitely emanated from here. My hand became blackened with soot as I continued rubbing, and then I stopped. Beneath the scorch marks, I could see part of a deeply etched magic circle.

“Why is this…?”

I couldn’t believe my eyes.
