Marriage with a Suspiciously Demure Husband - Chapter 107.1
Chapter 107.1
“We should discuss this with Kairos.”
The north was currently in chaos, battling monsters daily. It was highly likely that Kairos and I wouldn’t be able to attend the Founding Festival.
Every day we were absent meant more land would be tainted. Had the situation improved elsewhere? Unlikely. I’d spoken with the guild leaders recently, and there had been no such news.
In fact, the last people I’d contacted two days ago were Ted and Linae in Pyronthe, and they were deeply concerned about their own escalating situation. Fortunately, Kairos was scheduled to return from his patrol this afternoon, so we could speak soon.
* * *
A mountain of unidentified magical artifacts lay in a disorganized heap. Bookshelves lining three walls overflowed with thick volumes. A plush crimson sofa sat opposite a jet-black table. A glass teapot bubbled ceaselessly without a heat source.
The floor was covered with a chaotic carpet.
The room, crammed with furniture and objects, lacked any sense of harmony. The two men within the room, equally disparate, amplified this discord. One was monochrome, the other a rainbow.
“Any problems since that day?”
“None. Although, my nightmares have intensified.”
“Nightmares?”
Kairos was visiting the mage tower. After Hazel’s recent collapse, he’d been forced to accept aid from the Imperial Palace and had been frequently traveling back and forth.
“I’ve always had nightmares from time to time. Lately, it’s been harder to wake up. Could there be a connection?”
The water Hazel had drunk wasn’t ordinary. What the Imperial Palace couldn’t detect, the mage tower had uncovered: a small amount of monster blood.
It disrupted Hazel’s control over her dark magic, causing her to lose consciousness and triggering the uncontrolled surge of power. Someone had tampered with the water during his brief absence.
Suspiciously, only the water Hazel had chosen.
The culprit remained at large. Every servant in the Duke’s household had been examined while Hazel slept, and everyone present at the banquet that day had been investigated. With no leads, anyone even remotely connected was being pursued.
“No, I don’t believe so. The nightmares seem to be a separate issue.”
“I see.”
Kairos’s worry deepened.
“It would be best to investigate if anything has occurred that could have disturbed her deep psyche.”
The man sitting before Kairos had been instrumental in calming Hazel’s rampant dark magic. His name was Rendil, one of the three high-ranking administrators of the mage tower.
The tower was managed by Germain Vailson, the tower’s master and the Empire’s oldest mage, along with his young apprentice, Rendil Paniman, and two other high-ranking administrators, Sioka Ebel and Perry Bowman.
Rendil was the leading candidate to become the next tower master.
With slicked-back crimson hair and piercing blue eyes, he wore an array of dazzling, rainbow-hued jewelry, contrasting sharply with his carelessly unbuttoned robe. Despite his flamboyant appearance, his tone toward Kairos was respectful.
“I will.”
Rendil steepled his fingers, tapping them on the table.
“Although unlikely, if the same thing happens again, bring her directly to the mage tower. If that’s not possible, administer the stabilizer immediately.”
“Understood.”
“It’s fortunate it was you, Your Grace, who was with the Duchess. Anyone else, and she would have died. Did she consume all of the stabilizers I provided?”
“Every drop.”
“If she’s finished it, she should have recovered. There shouldn’t be any problems even if she uses her powers again. I’ll provide you with more for emergencies.”
A heavy silence fell between Kairos and Rendil. Kairos was consumed with worry for Hazel, while Rendil was troubled by the perplexing situation.
Witnessing Hazel’s initial surge of power had been alarming.
