Marriage with a Suspiciously Demure Husband - Chapter 105.2
Chapter 105.2
“…They are being cautious, but it’s not that bad yet. But why…?”
Ginger shrugged.
“We heard you’re leaving in a year.”
“How did you know that?”
My voice was barely audible, a shocked whisper.
I had told Ginger that things had worked out, but I hadn’t given her the specifics. Only Annie knew about my plans to leave in a year because of the unbreakable bond we shared.
“We contacted Annie. It…wasn’t easy.”
“Annie…?”
How had they managed to contact Annie, someone even I couldn’t reach without going through Dylan or her initiating contact?
I stared at Ginger, dumbfounded. What was going on behind that innocent face of hers?
“Anyway, the reason we came… honestly, we haven’t been at peace since we left. It felt like we hadn’t truly escaped our life on the run. After talking to Annie and… well, as I said, we came to repay our debt to you. We’ll stay with you, at least until you leave.”
Her last words were almost too quiet to hear.
“….”
I looked at Edmond, my expression grim. He simply bowed his head in response. So, they had come to fulfill Edmund’s promise to repay his debt. Ginger added that they had gone to great lengths to get here, so I shouldn’t send them away.
My head throbbed even harder. In the original story, Ginger was incredibly intelligent. Incredibly rational. Now, my biggest question was how Kairos had let them in. Kairos wouldn’t have just let them walk in.
“…So, how did you get in here?”
What could they have possibly said to convince him? Ginger seemed to consider this for a moment, then smiled sheepishly.
“We’ve actually been here for over two weeks.”
“Two weeks?”
“We were caught almost as soon as we arrived near the duchy. We thought we were well hidden, but Sid recognized me. We figured we’d have to get caught eventually if we wanted to see you, so…we let it happen.”
Two weeks. And Kairos hadn’t said a word to me.
“And?”
“Edmund offered his services as your guard, and I asked to work as your secretary. We asked the… Duke. We were half-expecting to be killed, but he listened to us. He made us swear we wouldn’t betray you, and then he let us in.”
I could hardly believe the words coming out of Ginger’s mouth.
Kairos hadn’t only allowed Ginger and Edmond, two people he should have found utterly contemptible, to enter his castle, but he had also spoken with them.
He had accepted their oaths of loyalty without so much as a scratch and then allowed them to see me. He had agreed to let them stay by my side, the very people who had helped me escape.
I was utterly bewildered. He had become more vigilant about having people around me since I had collapsed and been taken to the Imperial Palace, but this was completely unexpected.
After a long conversation with the two of them, I left the reception room.
I asked Mrs. Tene to arrange accommodations for them, then went in search of Kairos. I wanted to hear his reasoning directly, to understand what he was thinking. I stopped a passing maid.
“Yes, Madam? Did you call for me?”
“Do you know where the Duke is now?”
“His Grace? I heard the magic beast alarm go off earlier, and the knights were being dispatched… I believe he went with them. Shall I find out and let you know?”
“No, it’s not urgent. I’ll check myself. You can go back to your duties.”
“Yes, Madam.”
“….”
The maid was right. Kairos had left to deal with the magic beast incursion.
I didn’t see him again until nearly dinnertime. He remained silent throughout the meal. I stole glances at him, fidgeting with my fork and knife. Finally, I decided to ask him, but the words caught in my throat.
“Ahem.”
Kairos looked up immediately. I quickly took a sip of water and set down my glass. Alright, I would ask. I had to know.
“About…Edmund and Ginger…”
“Yes.”
“Why did you let them in?”
