Chapter 105.1

“…Ginger? Edmund?!”

My eyes darted between the two of them, unable to process their presence.

“What are you doing here? Why are you here?”

I practically shrieked their names, my voice laced with disbelief. They both stood frozen, their expressions even more bewildered than my own.

I saved you, and now you’ve come back to die? Panic seized me, and I spun around, my heart pounding. The door to the reception room, the one Kairos himself had opened, was now silently closed.

Wait. Just wait.

What…what was happening?

Unless someone else wearing his mask had been here, Kairos had definitely opened this door. How…how was this possible? I took a deep breath, trying to compose myself, and turned back to face them.

I still couldn’t believe it.

My gaze flickered between Ginger, Edmund, and the closed door as if I were hallucinating. Finally, I managed to gather my wits and approach them. I had to figure this out. Whatever this was.

“It’s…good to see you. You both look well, which is a relief…”

My voice was strained, barely a whisper. As I approached them, my hands clenched tightly around my dress. Surely, even Kairos wouldn’t stoop to eavesdropping.

He had promised to try to win me over directly. But still…

“…Why are you here? Have you both gone mad?”

I had given them a year’s worth of provisions and sent them away. Their sudden reappearance was beyond baffling. Ginger simply offered a casual greeting as if nothing were amiss.

“We thought you’d be pleased to see us, Boss.”

“Pleased? Of course, I’m pleased. I’m glad you’re both alive. But, Ginger, I told you never to come north. Under no circumstances. I said no matter how desperate you were for money, you should never even think about joining mercenary raiding parties… don’t you remember?”

“Yes, Boss. I remember everything you said.”

I pressed my fingers to my throbbing temples.

“So, you do remember. Just checking. If you’re here because you were worried about me, it’s alright. You didn’t need to risk your lives coming here. Now that you’ve seen I’m safe, go back. Before Kairos changes his mind.”

Ginger and Edmond exchanged glances but made no move to leave.

What was wrong with them? I had paid them handsomely. Why hadn’t they just take the money and run? Could this be the ‘good news’ Annie had mentioned? This didn’t feel like good news.

This was Kairos Hadid’s ducal castle!

“Please, sit down. We have something to tell you.”

Edmond’s voice was calm and measured. His hair had grown slightly longer since I last saw him, softening his features. Was it because he no longer had to wield a sword? Or perhaps it was the effect of being reunited with his beloved?

I sighed and sank onto the sofa.

“Fine. Ginger, tell me why you’re here. Quickly.”

“I told you, Boss. We came to see you.”

“….”

“And we’re not leaving, Boss.”

Her words made me feel like I had swallowed a mouthful of ginger root.

“Don’t tell me you’re in debt… or broke? You didn’t go back to the arena, did you?”

“What do you take us for? We’re done with all that. We’re not crazy enough to go back to the arena.”

“Then why…?”

Ginger began to explain, her voice steady.

“The day you sent us away, we went straight to Castalt. We didn’t sleep a wink. Our parents live nearby, but we needed to get as far away as possible, at least for a while.”

“….”

“Anyway, we stayed there briefly, then settled in Tenegal. We’ve been living there until recently. We were planning to visit your house in Mabel, but we decided against it, just in case.”

“And?”

I listened intently, dividing my attention between Ginger and the door.

“Even there, we heard rumors about the northern magic beasts. How they’re unusually aggressive, and the situation is getting serious. We even heard stories about how they closed off the village after sunset. Is that true?”
