Chapter 6

‘I have no idea where the ledger is kept. Maybe it’s in the archive.’
There was a good chance that last year’s ledgers were in the archive. Sien probably didn’t care about having the most recent one in particular.
Any ledger with something he could use against them would surely do.
‘The archive is most likely off-limits to anyone except staff.’
Still, the temple itself was open to commoners, so it was convenient that she could walk around as she pleased.
Doing her best to look natural and as if she was just aimlessly walking, Adeline searched for the archive.
That was when she found an internal map of the temple hanging in the center of the first floor.
Upon checking it, she saw that while nothing was outright labeled ‘archive’, there was a floor reserved solely for the priests.
Thus, her target was the fifth floor.
Adeline started moving and ascended the stairs. Of course, she wasn’t foolish enough to head straight up to the fifth floor without a plan.
Since the fifth floor was for priests only, she’d have to sneak up there.
So first, she went up to the third floor and strolled slowly through the hallway.
“……”
Then she quietly lifted her head to look at the ceiling. If things worked out, it looked like she could move via the ceiling.
Once she’d finished checking the state of the ceiling, Adeline unconsciously turned her head to look out the window.
She could see the nobles gathered for the outdoor inauguration. Since she was up high, the people below were in clear view.
The person who stood out most among them was, of course, Sien. Partly because he was her master, but also because he was just that noticeable in general.
Sien probably realized that Adeline was watching him. Still, he didn’t acknowledge her, likely because drawing attention to her would make her stand out as well.
‘Should I come back here once the job is done?’
She’d need to observe the mood between Sien and Claire.
Besides, the fact that Sien’s earring had faded in color was bothering her. The faster this pair faded compared to previous ones, the clearer it was that his body was nearing its limit.
So, as much as possible, Adeline had to stay somewhere she could keep an eye on him. The moment Sien’s health started to deteriorate, she had to retrieve him faster than anyone.
That would mean a maid suddenly barging in among the nobles—a grave discourtesy—but there was no helping it.
‘Even now, Young Master is looking at women as if he’s just being polite.’
The three women gathered around Sien were so clearly interested in him that it was obvious even from here. Sien, however, was different.
He was smiling and politely interacting with the women, pretending to be perfectly normal, but it was obvious he wasn’t paying the slightest bit of attention.
Adeline could more or less guess what the women were saying to Sien. She focused on reading their lips.
[ I heard about how you haven’t chosen a fiancée yet, Young Duke. ]
[ Will you be leaving right after the inauguration? ]
Interpreting the women’s words from their lips, Adeline nodded as if she’d expected as much.
Not only was Sien from a prominent house, but he was handsome, too. Based on that alone, he was the type of man any woman would want.
But women’s evaluations of him were divided straight down the middle.
One side saw him as the perfect husband material, a duke’s heir with good looks and nothing lacking.
The other saw him as a man with a cruel nature, someone best avoided.
In short, women either coveted Sien or avoided him. There was no in-between.
‘Where is Saintess Claire though?’
In the past, Adeline might have sighed in worry about whether her Young Master would ever manage to get married, but things were different now.
He could just marry Claire.
Having decided, on her own, that Sien and Claire should end up together, Adeline figured that since things had come this far, she might as well check the face of the future duchess before moving on.
Aqua-colored hair… Aqua-colored hair…
Moving her gaze busily in search of Claire, Adeline suddenly sensed someone approaching.
“Excuse me, are you lost?”
At the sound of someone speaking to her in a gentle voice, Adeline turned away from the window to look at the person beside her.
