“You seem especially deep in thought today.”

As Adeline was busy picturing the dreadful future that might await her, a certain someone poked her cheek with his index finger.
There was only one person who would play such a prank on her.
“Young Master Sien.”
Adeline slowly opened her eyes and looked at Sien, who had poked her cheek.
Sien’s white hair fluttered softly in the breeze.
“What are you thinking about so much?”
Sien asked, sounding a little displeased, likely because Adeline had ignored his summons several times.
Adeline stared for a moment at the white hair that drifted over his brows, then quickly searched for words, her mind racing.
She couldn’t possibly talk about the original story.
Luckily, something she needed to tell Sien came to mind. She had just remembered Duke Floye’s errand, which she’d forgotten while thinking about Claire.
“As it happens, Master is looking for y—”
But Adeline couldn’t finish her sentence.
“Your master is me.”
Oh, really?
She had carelessly uttered words Sien didn’t want to hear.
And he didn’t just let it go.
A strange glint appeared in Sien’s eyes, which had always been smiling beautifully. It was the kind of look that promised trouble if she didn’t correct herself immediately.
“That was careless of me. I apologize. His Grace the Duke is looking for you, Young Master.”
Adeline quickly apologized and corrected the title, trying to lighten Sien’s mood.
Although there was no sign of real regret on her face, it seemed enough to appease Sien. He answered, satisfied,
“I was just on my way back from seeing him.”
Sien’s way of speaking was far more free-spirited than that of a typical noble, especially in front of Adeline.
“That punk wants me to attend the saintess’s inauguration in his stead.”
Um, no matter how close you were, what kind of noble called their own parent ‘that punk’ though?
But Adeline didn’t point out Sien’s manner of speech.
She was used to it, and this was simply the way Sien was.
Besides, her attention wasn’t on Sien’s words, but on the phrase ‘saintess’s inauguration’ that had just come from his mouth.
“The saintess’s inauguration?”
She was so distracted she repeated it dumbly.
“…My Adeline is doing a lot of things she doesn’t usually do today.”
Reading the curiosity in her black eyes, Sien narrowed his eyes and spoke. It was rare for Adeline to show any interest in someone other than Sien himself.
To exaggerate a little, it was almost unheard of.
But here she was, her eyes wide in plain view of everyone, not just curious, but actually interested.
“You’re curious about the saintess?”
Sien pushed Adeline’s black hair, which had fallen loose, back over her shoulder as he asked.
He could have left it at that, but…
His large hand gripped Adeline’s shoulder tightly.
Ah, another mistake.
Adeline quickly erased the curiosity from her eyes, faster than light, and shook her head.
“It’s not so much curiosity… It’s just, I heard a rumor the saintess can purify monsters.”
“If you remember rumors about the saintess, you must be interested.”
The hand gripping Adeline’s shoulder began to tighten.
“Did I tell you to look into the saintess?”
He questioned her, almost accusingly. Adeline looked up at Sien with her usual lifeless gaze.
Sien’s twisted possessiveness was nothing new to her.
It really was, quite literally, the possessiveness of someone who refused to let anyone else have what belonged to them.
“Of course not.”
Adeline obediently shook her head.
“It’s just… I thought the saintess’s purification ability might help you, Young Master.”
Leaving out anything related to the original story, Adeline explained that she thought Claire’s power might help with Sien’s incurable illness.
It wasn’t just Adeline who thought so, either. Anyone who knew about Sien’s illness would have thought the same.
Of course, at present, only his family and Adeline knew about his illness.
“Hmph…”
Interpreted, what Adeline was saying was that her interest in the saintess was purely for Sien’s sake. At least, that’s how it sounded to Sien.
At the end of the day, that was the underlying truth anyway.
The dark mood around Sien slowly began to lighten. The pressure on Adeline’s shoulder lessened, too.
As her shoulder finally felt some relief, Adeline asked in a flat voice,
“Young Master, you were about to crush my shoulder just now, weren’t you?”
She was about to ask him not to do that since it would make it hard for her to work, but Sien pulled aside the garment covering Adeline’s shoulder.
A red handprint was left on Adeline’s pale skin.
Sien gently stroked over it with a tender hand.
It was the very picture of ‘causing the illness and then handing out the cure’.
While Adeline was inwardly shaking her head, Sien’s voice rang out.
“As if I would. Maybe if it were your ankle, but not your shoulder.”
