Chapter 40.2

I let out a deep sigh and shook my head.

It wasn’t like his lack of a social life had any impact on me, but still…

“….”

The issue was that after listing out the people Heron had spoken to over the past three days, I found myself feeling strangely conflicted.

Perhaps it was because it reminded me a little too much of my own lack of social connections.

“…If this were my list, Juan and Darren would be off the list, and Marie would be added instead.”

A wave of bitterness washed over me as I glanced at the paper one last time before shoving it into the drawer.

‘Realizing again how small our social circles are won’t magically make Aidelis any better at talking to people.’

In the process of trying to figure out who Heron might be searching for, I ended up only reaffirming how socially inept we both were. Shaking off the thoughts, I sifted through the tray Marie had placed on my desk earlier that morning.

〈 I remembered you attended the party last time, so I thought you might be interested again and brought this with me! 〉

She knew that the only reason I had attended the last party was for her treatment, yet she pretended not to know and handed me another invitation.

Was she really that concerned about me not getting along with the other noblewomen? As I thought about it, I suddenly wondered if Marie was concerned about my poor social skills, just like I had been about Heron’s, and the realization hit me with a twinge of bitterness.

“Honestly, who am I to be worrying about someone else…”

Just then, I noticed the seal of the Grand Duchy of Kaisian tucked between the invitations. I hurriedly opened the envelope, wondering if they were contacting me again about Marie’s treatment.

“I hope this letter reaches you, my lady…”

Even though there was no sender’s name, just the seal of the Grand Duchy of Kaisian, it wasn’t hard to figure out that Estieren had sent it.

‘If this were from Perideline, she definitely would have signed her name.’

What was odd, however, was that the letter contained nothing but that one sentence. Maybe it was written so vaguely on purpose, in case someone else happened to see it?

‘But if I can’t even figure out what it means, what’s the point of sending a letter at all?’

I flipped the small piece of paper over, inspecting both sides with a puzzled expression.

At first glance, it appeared to be an ordinary sheet of parchment. The only unusual thing was that the sentence was written in small letters in the upper corner rather than in the center, almost as if the space below had been deliberately left empty to be filled with more text.

‘Could this be magically enchanted paper?’

Out of nowhere, I remembered the enchanted paper that was set to become all the rage in Arbonis in just a few months.

This magical paper worked by splitting a single sheet into two—whatever was written on one half would instantly appear on the other. What made it even more remarkable was that the magic worked no matter how far apart the two sheets were. As a result, the invention quickly gained popularity as a means of communication, allowing lovers to exchange sweet words and soldiers to send commands during wartime.

“C-Could this really be that?”

Though I was skeptical, I hurriedly sat down and grabbed my quill.

Feeling unnecessarily nervous, I exhaled and, after thinking for a moment about what to write, I carefully wrote my message beneath his.

Did my message reach you?

Once I added the question mark, I couldn’t help but feel my face flush with embarrassment.

I considered fixing it, but that felt even more awkward, so I decided to wait patiently for his response. But after waiting anxiously for what felt like forever, nothing happened on the paper.

“Ah, what’s this…”

I felt embarrassed for thinking that the empty space on the paper might be part of some magic that allowed for a back-and-forth conversation. I had even been impressed with myself for thinking it might be the magic paper that would become a huge trend in a few months.

The fact that I had excitedly grabbed my quill like a giddy child was so embarrassing, and my face instantly flushed.

Frustrated, I slammed the quill onto the desk with a loud thud.

Just then, a quick knock sounded at the door.

“Come in, Marie.”

I laid my head on the desk and spoke in a tired, uninterested tone. While I was still glaring at the paper, which had shown no changes, I heard footsteps coming closer to the desk.

“Marie, just throw away all the invitations. I’m not going to the party… Aah!”

As I was answering and pushing myself up from the desk, I was shocked to see the letters wriggling like worms. I immediately jumped to my feet. The sluggish, crawling letters disappeared from the paper in the blink of an eye.

“M-Marie, did you see this…?”

I grabbed the paper and called out to Marie. But as soon as I locked eyes with the person in front of me, I froze completely.
