Chapter 28.1
The Countess’s voice was heavy, as if she was announcing the danger of the Duchy of Solem.
“…Yes. I’ll also give up.”
Without much hesitation, Ariel followed her words. When she heard about the deaths that occurred every year, she had already given up on going to the Duchy of Solem. She had no intention of risking her life to make a connection between Racine.
“Thank you for listening to my story. I’ll take my leave now.”
“You might as well go to the Imperial Palace.”
Just as she was about to stand up, the Countess’s words stopped her in her tracks.
“…The Imperial Palace?”
“I can also write a personal letter to the Imperial Palace. Since you’ve previously served the Prince and been recognized as a loyal subject of the imperial court, it wouldn’t be difficult for you to go there.”
“Can you do that?”
“I’m saying this because it’s possible. There’s no better option than the Imperial Palace if you want to make friends with high-ranking people. What do you think? Do you want me to write it for you?”
“Yes, please.”
“All right then. I can’t guarantee entry, but it’s still better than going to the Duchy of Solem.”
The Countess was right. It would be much more plausible to pretend to stumble upon each other at the Imperial Palace under the guise of going to see the test result.
“What reason shall we give? It should be something you can also justify.”
“The results of the examination conducted at the invitation of His Highness the Crown Prince have yet to arrive. Why don’t we use that as a pretext for the visit?”
“Not a bad idea. Since you have to report to the Imperial Palace anyway, that should suffice. Take some jewelry to present to the Palace when you go.”
“Yes. Thank you for responding to my sudden request.”
“It’s a given. You’re the only successor to the title of the County of Huckley.”
The Countess responded calmly.
‘Successor…’
It was a word that gave her a strange feeling. It was a title that didn’t suit her anyway since she was going to leave. A sense of guilt and responsibility weighed heavily on her shoulders.
‘No, don’t dwell on it anymore.’
She wanted to focus only on the task at hand.
Ariel bowed her head in gratitude and withdrew.

The Countess carefully selected a date and sent a letter to help Ariel achieve her wishes. It would be difficult if she had gone all the way there without meeting any high-ranking nobles. Fortunately, when permission to visit the Imperial Palace was granted, a noble council meeting regarding the southern war matter had been scheduled.
It had been just three days since her meeting in the library with Racine.
Ariel, who had been invited to the south wing of the Palace, waited nervously in the reception room.
‘How many people will be here?’
She turned on her phone with a trembling heart.
『 A target has been detected nearby. 』
『 Devoncia von Elios Lévretin
▷ Favorability towards you: [ Unable to verify ] (Due to a temporary error, the verification of the affection is delayed.)
▷ Current Location: Imperial Palace North Wing — 1st Floor Conference Room. 』
『 A target has been detected nearby. 』
『 Skylar von Aither Lévretin
▷ Favorability towards you: ♥♥ (He’s strongly conscious of you and will often initiate conversations with you first.)
▷ Current Location: Imperial Palace South Wing — 2nd Floor Reception Room. 』
『 A target has been detected nearby. 』
『 Lexius Créssien
▷ Favorability towards you: ♥ (He’s interested in you, and if you talk to him, there’s a high probability of him responding.)
▷ Current Location: Imperial Palace North Wing — 1st Floor Conference Room. 』
『 A target has been detected nearby. 』
『 Racine di Solem
▷ Favorability towards you: — (He’s not interested in you.)
▷ Current Location: Imperial Palace South Wing — 3rd Floor Reception Room. 』
‘Four of them!’
All the targets were in the Imperial Palace.
This was her biggest opportunity before entering the academy, and it would be a waste if she didn’t take advantage of it. However, it wouldn’t be possible to meet all four. They were each in different locations, and the situation was difficult.
Ariel decided on her priorities.
In any case, it wouldn’t be easy to meet Devoncia or Lexius, who were in the meeting at the north wing.
‘For now, I need to prioritize meeting Racine first, and if there’s an opportunity, see Devoncia or Lexius later… but not Skylar.’
It was better not to meet with him since it would only complicate things if his favorability, already at two, were to increase before transferring to the academy.
Racine was located in the same south wing as her. It was a reception room on the third floor, easily accessible with just a flight of stairs.
The key was a reason to meet him.
Ariel mulled over the matter prepared for her by the Countess.
‘It’s an exchange between families, so even if it’s Racine, he wouldn’t outright refuse or ignore it.’
Despite thinking this way, she wasn’t entirely sure.
Still, she had no other choice. Racine would have no reason to object no matter what she said if it were a personal matter.
‘Let’s go out there. Even if I get rejected, let’s at least give it a try.’
That was the conclusion she reached.
Thanks to the gathering of high-ranking nobles in the north wing for the council meeting, the guards and servants were gathered in that area. It was a golden opportunity.
Ariel stepped out into the reception room.
She visited after inquiring about the fact that she hadn’t received the aptitude test results, but neither the Imperial Palace nor the Crown Prince had responded yet. While the attendant told her to wait, it wasn’t an order. So, even if she were to leave now, she had an excuse.
She walked carefully down the corridor. There was hardly any sign of presence until she reached the stairs.
As she checked her phone intermittently, Ariel studied the building layout and the locations of her targets. Racine was still stationary in the reception room on the third floor. Despite the fact that Skylar was on the second floor, he wasn’t leaving the reception room either, so the risk of encountering him was minimal.
It was the moment Ariel had optimistically anticipated.
Suddenly, Skylar’s portrait began to move.
Skylar left the reception room and entered the corridor. His movement headed toward the stairs without hesitation.
『 A target has been detected nearby. 』
『 Skylar von Aither Lévretin
▷ Favorability towards you: ♥♥ (He’s strongly conscious of you and will often initiate conversations with you first.)
▷ Current Location: Imperial Palace South Wing — 2nd Floor Corridor. 』
The text on the system window changed, indicating that Skylar was approaching.
Ariel’s eyes turned towards the white stairs nearby.
From the direction leading upstairs, faint sounds of footsteps in shoes were heard before they grew louder. It echoed through the marble of the staircase.
If things continued like this, she would come face to face with him without any chance to avoid it.
Slowly, she stepped back.
Ariel, taking a step backward, immediately turned her body as she entered the corridor. She walked briskly as if she were running and ran away in a hurry. When she checked her phone the next moment, she could see that Skylar’s portrait was constantly moving. His portrait descended the stairs and entered the corridor.
Coincidentally, it was the same path she had just taken.
It was strange.
‘…Is he following me?’
Ariel felt a shiver run down her spine.
