Chapter 39

While I was pondering over how to overcome this situation, the other three were getting ready to go to Tommy.

“Heyna, is something wrong? You don’t look so good.”

Dekir whispered to me with a concerned voice.

“Huh? Oh, it’s just that I’m worried about Tommy…”

It wasn’t a lie that I was worried about Tommy. I was concerned about Tommy being with a ghost.

“I see.”

Dekir stroked my head and smiled gently.

“It’s going to be okay.”

His unwavering eyes seemed to say that he knew what I was worried about and that he would help me.

Even though that was impossible.

Even then, his reassurance eased my mind a little.

“What are you doing! Let’s go quickly and save Tommy.”

At Rose’s urging, Dekir said, “Wait a minute, everyone.”

“Huh? Why?”

“Wouldn’t it be better to split into two groups, one for the first floor and one for the second floor, instead of going together like this?”

Rose was taken aback by Dekir’s sudden suggestion.

“What are you talking about? What’s the point of going to the first floor?”

“Look.”

Dekir took out a paper map from his bag and pointed to a room with a red dot.

“If you look at the map, you can see that Tommy is in the third room from the right. But it doesn’t say which floor this room is on.”

“Of course it’s on the second floor. Look, here too.”

Rose pointed to a part of the map where a blue dot was marked.

“It’s the same size as the hall we’re in.”

“That’s right. But let’s look around once. Except for the hall, aren’t the other structures like corridors and rooms closer to the first floor than the second floor?”

Dekir was right.

The structure drawn on the paper map was different from the structure of the second floor in many ways, excluding the hall.

“But still….”

Rose and Dekir both had valid points.

“We have plenty of time anyway, so let’s check the second floor first and then go down to the first floor if he’s not there.”

“What if something happens to Tommy in the meantime?”

“W- what do you mean something happens!”

“The fact that we have to find him within an hour or he’ll never come back means that Tommy’s life is in danger, doesn’t it?”

Dekir’s voice was still gentle, but it was sharp like a blade. He was staring down at Rose.

‘Is it okay to be so leisurely when Tommy might be in trouble?’

“….”

Rose bit her lip tightly, looking like she was about to cry.

“I’m sorry. I was too harsh. I’m just worried about Tommy…”

Dekir, who had been attacking Rose a moment ago, was now comforting her as if nothing had happened.

“…No, Dekir, you’re right.”

In the face of Dekir’s sharp criticism followed by gentle persuasion, Rose eventually admitted that her thinking was short-sighted.

“Then let’s split into two groups, just like Dekir said.”

Zion, who had been listening quietly, naturally took the lead and gave instructions.

“The second floor is bigger, so the men should take the second floor and the women should check the first floor.”

After hearing Zion’s words, Dekir replied firmly.

“No, let’s split into teams of two, one man and one woman.”

Zion’s eyebrows twitched. His mouth still held a gentle smile, but his eyes, which were glaring at Dekir, held clear hostility.

‘He’s trying to do my job.’

“Why do you insist on dividing the teams into men and women?”

“Well…”

Red eyes met mine briefly. Winking at me with a slight squint, he said, “If a ghost suddenly appears, wouldn’t it be more reassuring to have a man to protect them than just two women?”

“Well, I guess so.”

I mentally applauded Dekir’s smooth persuasion.

He was able to change the minds of two prideful people with just a few words.

‘Great job, Dekir.’

“Then I’ll go to the first floor with Heyna.”

“Okay, then Zion and I will search the second floor.”

I went down to the first floor with Dekir.

‘No matter how much I think about it, the second floor seems more likely than the first floor…’

The message that started Chapter 2 clearly said that this chapter takes place on the second floor.

So did we really need to look around the first floor?

I thought about how I could naturally shake off Dekir and go up to the second floor while pretending to look around.

‘Is there any excuse I can use to wander around by myself without raising suspicion?’

The room marked with a red dot on the map was the third room on the right hallway.

As soon as we got there, Dekir said in an urgent voice, “Heyna, I’m so sorry, but can I go to the bathroom real quick? It’s an emergency.”

The bathroom at this timing!

‘Nice!’

I cheered inwardly.

I even thought that Dekir might have read my mind and was moving the way I wanted him to.

“Yeah. Go ahead, Deki.”

“I’m so sorry. I’ll be right back.”

Dekir really seemed to need to use the bathroom as he ran off in a hurry.

‘Okay, now let’s go to the second floor.’

If anyone later asked why I went to the second floor alone, I planned to answer, ‘I was so startled after seeing a ghost that I ran away and ended up on the second floor.’

I was about to head straight up to the second floor when I stopped. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to check the room since I was already here.

This room was probably the doll room.

Yesterday, while looking around the first floor hallway, I opened every single door.

The third room at the end of the right hallway on the first floor.

If I remembered correctly, this was the room where old dolls and broken toys were scattered everywhere.

‘Yes. I should check it out just in case.’

Tommy wouldn’t be here anyway.

I pushed the door open forcefully.

“…Huh?”

Read ahead eight chapters here.
