Chapter 141

“The heart… turned black?”

A sense of foreboding washed over me. What should I do? Should I try to lower his affection? Hesitant to act rashly, I froze, unable to make a decision. Just then, Dekir popped his head in.

“Something the matter, Heyna?”

“Eek!” His sudden voice startled me, nearly sending me tumbling to the floor. Thankfully, Dekir caught me around the waist before I fell.

“What’s over there that surprised you so much?” Dekir’s gaze shifted towards Zion.

“Ah. Zion, you’re awake.”

You’re awake? Now isn’t the time to be so nonchalant! I knew Dekir was always calm, but… for him to sound so composed after seeing Zion’s face…

I glanced at Zion again, and another wave of shock hit me. The chillingly dark aura that had been burning in his eyes just moments ago had completely vanished.

“Yes, I just woke up.” Zion’s utterly serene reply left me bewildered. “Zion, were you watching me this whole time?”

“What? No.” Zion’s eyes widened, and he tilted his head. “I just woke up… What’s wrong?”

What’s wrong? You were glaring at me so menacingly just now! I hesitated, the words caught in my throat. I didn’t want to provoke him and risk something happening. “Oh, it’s nothing. More importantly, Zion, how are you feeling?”

“Excuse me?”

“Are you angry, or… having any bad thoughts?”

“No. Why would you ask such a thing, Heyna?”

“Heyna, what’s wrong?” Zion and Dekir voiced their concern simultaneously.

“Oh, it’s nothing… just…” Why did his heart turn black? What does a black heart even mean? I desperately wanted to open the affection tab and check Zion’s true feelings, but with both of them watching me, I couldn’t.

“I was just worried. Zion, you were attacked by a ghost earlier.” I offered a casual excuse. “Zion, do you remember what happened before you fainted?”

“…Suddenly, a white hand appeared…” Zion trailed off, frowning. He didn’t seem to remember what happened afterward. Thank goodness. He doesn’t remember me hitting him. Seizing the opportunity, I said smoothly, “Zion, you were trying to protect me when the ghost attacked you, and you fainted.”

“…I protected you?”

“Yes, that’s right.” I answered without thinking, then realized my mistake. Zion loves feeling like I’m being protected by him. This will increase his affection… or not. His affection was already maxed out. No matter what I did, it couldn’t go any higher. Or so I thought…

[Zion’s affection for Heyna has increased by 1.]

…What? How is that even possible?

***

While Heyna grappled with the affection system, inside Tommy’s dream…

I can’t possibly be in love with a commoner who’s so rude, ugly, and broke! Rose was in turmoil, utterly confused by her own feelings. He’s nothing like my ideal type. Her ideal man was the quintessential prince charming: a knight in shining armor rescuing her from danger, someone kind yet strong, capable of leading her. Tommy was none of those things.

Tommy is… Rose recalled the Tommy she knew. He was incredibly annoying, always picking fights and doing whatever he pleased. Despite being a commoner, he never seemed intimidated or self-conscious. He was truly rude and inconsiderate. Yet, strangely, Rose didn’t genuinely dislike him.

He’s uncooperative about everything, but when things get dangerous, he always steps up.

“Everyone, hide under the beds. I’ll open the door and lure the dolls away so you can escape.”

He didn’t hesitate to offer himself as bait when they were being chased by the dolls. And when the ghost appeared in the past room, Tommy had shielded Rose until the very end, refusing to abandon her even as he was attacked.

He always saved me. Just like… a gallant knight rescuing a damsel in distress. And then… Rose remembered what happened in the future room.

“Tommy carried you all the way here, Rose.”

“…Tommy?”

“Yes.” Rose was stunned by Zion’s words. “…Tommy, is what Zion said true?”

Tommy’s face was oddly flushed. He must be tired from carrying me. Rose hesitated, unsure what to say. She felt both sorry and grateful. Tommy, glancing at her, grumbled, “Yeah. Who else would carry someone as heavy as you all that way?”
