Chapter 139

“Am I… oblivious?” I was dumbfounded. If I were truly oblivious, I wouldn’t have survived this long!

“Yes. That’s why you don’t know Rose has feelings for Tommy.” Dekir chuckled, teasing me.

“…Rose has feelings for Tommy?”

“Yes.”

“No way!” I usually trusted Dekir, but this was impossible to accept. “That can’t be true. Why would Rose like Tommy?”

“There are plenty of reasons. For example, maybe Tommy protected her in the Room of the Past.”

“…For such a trivial reason?”

“Or maybe they’ve bickered so much they’ve grown fond of each other.”

The haughty Rose falling for a commoner like Tommy for such a reason? I still couldn’t believe it. Seeing my disbelief, Dekir asked, “What about you, Heyna?”

“…Huh?”

“When did you start liking me?”

“Liking you? I….”

When did I start liking Dekir like this? When did my heart start pounding at the simplest words, my face flushing at the most inopportune moments? Was it when I learned Dekir had lied about knowing me since childhood, to protect me from suspicion? No, I didn’t like him this much back then.

Then was it when Dekir saw the second memory fragment, Anna’s diary, and hid it from me? No, not then either. His confession had made my heart flutter. At the same time, I began to truly trust him, as a comrade and precious friend who would stay by my side until we escaped this game. But I hadn’t lost my heart to him like this. The moment I fell irrevocably for Dekir…

“I just… started liking you at some point.” I couldn’t pinpoint when, why, or even what my heart truly desired. Like the old saying about not noticing the rain soaking your clothes, Dekir had seeped into me, little by little, without me realizing it. And when I finally came to my senses, his presence within me was immense, leaving a void that nothing could fill.

“I… Deki…” I don’t know when I started liking you. But I do like you. The words I couldn’t utter echoed in my mind countless times. Pushing down the tangled mess of emotions, I finally managed to say, “I don’t know when it started, but… I do like you. As a friend.” I emphasized the word “friend.”

My heart ached as I spoke words contrary to my feelings. The sharp pang made me resent Dekir. ‘You said I didn’t have to answer… Liar!’ Knowing my feelings, why ask such a difficult question? Tears welled up in my eyes. First, he tells me Rose likes Tommy for no apparent reason, and now this impossible question. ‘It’s not fair.’

I was about to voice my frustration when, “Heyna,” his low voice resonated, and warm hands touched the nape of my neck. Dekir slowly drew me closer. Meeting my gaze, he whispered, “There’s no reason for love.”

***

Dekir was slightly annoyed with Heyna. More precisely, with her obliviousness. Whether Heyna noticed Rose’s feelings wasn’t important. He didn’t care about other people’s relationships. Yet, he felt disturbed. It was because he had been hurt by her indifference and lack of awareness.

“Honestly, I don’t understand. There’s no reason for you to like me.” Heyna’s voice from that day still echoed in his ears. ‘She’s still oblivious when it comes to love.’ Heyna was remarkably clueless only about romantic feelings. It was fortunate he had been so open about his affections; otherwise, she might still be unaware of them. ‘Is that why she liked that guy?’ The thought was unbearable.

“Heyna, when did you start liking me?” Forgetting his resolve to wait for Heyna to reveal her feelings, he blurted out the question, knowing it would put her in a difficult position.

“I don’t know when it started, but… I do like you. As a friend.” He knew Heyna had deliberately added “as a friend.” Knowing that still stung. “Heyna,” he said, unable to feel anger.

“There’s no reason for love.” Her emerald green eyes, reflecting the vibrant summer, blinked repeatedly. The sight of her staring at him with wide, doe-like eyes was incredibly endearing.

Dekir carefully pulled Heyna closer, as if handling a newborn kitten, and gently took her hand.

“De, Deki?” He lightly placed a finger on her lips as she trembled his name.

“….” Her parted lips closed.

Did Heyna know that her cheeks flushed the color of a summer peach whenever she faced him? They were doing so now, the soft, pale skin gradually turning a delicate pink. ‘With a face like that, those words are meaningless…’

Dekir pressed his lips to Heina’s cheek, fighting the urge to devour the soft flesh. He lingered, holding his lips there until her peach-like face ripened to the color of an apple. Then, he pulled away.

“When you’re in love…” he murmured, his gaze shifting to her delicate, fidgeting hands. They were so small, he could easily enclose both in one of his.
