Chapter 128

“Dekir…”

“Dekir?”

“Dekir only pretends to be nice in front of you!”

“.…”

“When you’re not around, he doesn’t smile or speak kindly. He acts like he doesn’t care what happens to anyone other than Heyna.”

I thought there would be some huge revelation.

‘So, Dekir is only kind to me and not to others, is that it?’

It was unexpected. The Dekir I knew was kind and considerate. If that kindness was only a facade he showed me…

‘That’s possible.’ Actually, I’d seen unexpected sides of Dekir a few times. He gave Zion the wrong answers in the Room of the Future, causing him to die twice, and he pressured Tommy to say he hated me.

These weren’t the actions of someone who was purely kind and gentle. I agreed with Rose that Dekir was particularly kind to me. But I didn’t think that was wrong. Because…

‘Isn’t it normal to be more considerate around someone you like?’ Everyone wants to look good in front of someone they’re interested in.

“Someone who’s that two-faced is dangerous!”

“….”

“You never know what they might do behind your back.”

“.…”

“Are you listening, Heyna?”

“Uh, uh? Y-yeah, I’m listening.”

Contrary to my answer, I was letting Rose’s words go in one ear and out the other. I wanted to listen to her properly, but I couldn’t focus.

Dekir’s kindness was only for me. This wasn’t good. Rose was telling me this because she was genuinely worried about me.

‘Heart, calm down.’

Unlike my thoughts, my heart wouldn’t settle down. This wasn’t the time to be feeling this way. Rose’s words had made me like Dekir even more.

I preferred someone who was kind only to me rather than to everyone. It meant that Dekir considered me special. While I was trying to calm my fluttering heart, Dekir, who had been far away, approached us.

“What’s this?”

Rose’s face hardened with wariness as soon as she saw Dekir. Dekir simply smiled at her sharp reaction, showing no discomfort.

“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but Rose’s voice was so loud that I overheard your conversation.”

Rose flinched.

“So, do you have a problem with that? I wasn’t wrong, was I?” Her defiant tone was laced with a tremor.

She was pretending to be nonchalant, but she was probably feeling apologetic inside. She’d been talking behind his back and got caught red-handed.

“A problem? Not at all.”

Dekir shook his head, looking strangely amused.

“Then why did you come over here?”

“I wanted to apologize to Rose.”

“…Huh?”

“I think I’ve misunderstood you. I didn’t know you were such a wonderful person… I’m sorry.”

Rose seemed utterly bewildered, clearly not expecting an apology from Dekir. But only for a moment. She quickly reverted to her usual sharp tone.

“…What are you doing? Are you trying to act nice again because Heyna’s here? I won’t fall for it!”

“Yes, you’re right. As you said, I was trying to impress Heyna, so I was being more considerate than usual… I can see how that might have made me seem two-faced.”

“Heyna, did you hear what Dekir just said? See? It was all an act!”

“It might have seemed like an act… but please don’t misunderstand, Heyna. Everything I’ve said to you, everything I’ve shown you, has been genuine.”

“Genuine, my foot. Heyna, don’t fall for his lies.”

Being caught between the two of them, growling at each other, was starting to give me a headache. I was trying to figure out how to resolve the situation when—

The music that had been playing continuously stopped abruptly. At the same time, everyone who had been dancing froze, as if malfunctioning. An unsettling feeling washed over me.

“…What’s going on?”

Rose, also sensing the strange atmosphere, huddled close beside me, her voice hushed.

“Heyna.”

Dekir was now beside me as well. As he approached, Rose shot him a wary look and gripped my arm tightly. But I didn’t have time to worry about Rose and Dekir.

[Rose Liverton is waking up from her dream.]

[The boundary between dream and reality is collapsing.]

[Escape from Rose Liverton’s dream.]

[If you don’t escape in time, you will be trapped in the dream forever.]

Messages appeared before my eyes, one after another. Escape from the dream? Wouldn’t it all end if I just woke Rose up?

Fwoosh—

The dazzling, brilliant lights went out in an instant. The ballroom was left with only a faint, unknown light source. And…

The ghosts in the ballroom, each with their unique appearance, all transformed into distorted shadowy figures.

“Hic.”

Startled by the black shadows writhing in the darkness, Rose hiccuped. The ghosts turned their heads in unison at the sound.

“Rose?”

“Rose…”

“Rose. Rose.”

The black masses called Rose’s name in different voices.

“No…”

“Don’t. Go.”

“Don’t. Leave.”

“Out, out, outside. Is. Dangerous.”

“Don’t. Go.”

The shadows, their arms outstretched, began to stagger towards us.
