I Picked Up the Trash Others Threw Away - Chapter 36.2
Chapter 36.2
Still, I was equally anxious. It was necessary to have safety measures in place.
“If I don’t come back in the morning, will you come looking for me?”
“Isn’t that too late? If something happens before then…”
“Do you think they’re going to kill me? I haven’t even told the casino owner about all the interesting game items he wanted to know about.”
My biggest weapon for now was that I was the only one who knew about modern games that were still unknown in this world.
I tapped my head with my fingers and smiled as if to tell Trish not to worry.
“Still, it would be better to at least bring something for self-defense. Or shall I learn swordsmanship?”
“You can learn self-defense with a dagger, but other than that, it won’t be very useful. You won’t even be able to enter the casino with a weapon in the first place.”
“Then, isn’t it pretty risky for the guests?”
“It’s an illegal establishment. Anyone willing to break the law has to accept some risks.”
Trish shook his head briefly.
He looked reluctant, but technically speaking, the contract with Seraph was ‘my business’, so it wasn’t something he could get involved in.
We left the restaurant and returned to the Malekiah mansion.
While I carried all the dress samples I had gotten at the atelier and the other accessories we purchased, I asked for a bath to be prepared. After finishing the bath, I said I wanted to be alone and sent everyone back.
Fortunately, I had stashed the exotic dress I received from Mr. Wellington, my mother’s lover, in a separate box.
It was a completely different style from what I usually wore. By dressing carefully and even putting on a wig, I could hide my identity from everyone except Seraph.
It would be very convenient to have something like magic at times like this, but there was no such thing in this worldview.
“I’ve gotten so used to being dressed with the servants’ help that it’s a pain to do it on my own.”
I struggled as I put on the dress, then rolled up my navy-blue hair and tucked it inside the wig. It was a long, brown wig, something that would look plain even under dim lights.
I put on a butterfly mask like one you’d wear to a masquerade ball, and most of my face was covered except for my mouth.
When I was ready, I looked in the mirror with a satisfied face. Trish knocked on the door connecting my room to the adjacent room.
As I took off my mask and let him in, he glanced at my outfit and immediately made a fuss.
“Where in the world did you get this dress? Beyond being old-fashioned, it’s a design that doesn’t seem to be trendy at all in the social world.”
“So, won’t this make it more difficult for other people to guess who I am? It’s not like I’m going to a ball, this is just for show.”
“Anyway, I told Allen and Simon you’re going out. Even if they can’t get inside the game room, you should have at least a knight accompany you.”
When it was 11 o’clock, all the hallway lights in the Malekiah mansion would be turned off, so I had to sneak out through the back door in the dark.
Thanks to Trish, who was constantly running away and spending the nights outside, I had come to know of a secret path I could use to get out quickly without being seen by anyone.
I just had to go down to the basement through the kitchen pantry, and back up through a staircase that led to the back door.
If I got caught heading to the kitchen, I could just say I was hungry or that I wanted to get some water, so it was a decent path.
“I feel like I’m on some sort of secret mission. It’s thrilling.”
“You do know what it means for a newlywed bride to go out at night, right? Be careful not to get caught.”
“I know, Trish. See you in the morning!”
At midnight, as the woman who had met me at the restaurant said, the carriage that had come to pick me up arrived just in front of the back door.
With Allen and Simon’s help, I came out the back door of the mansion through the secret passage and got on the carriage with the two of them.
The horses were trained to be silent, so they didn’t make any noise. Even their hooves barely made a sound, as if they had been specially crafted.
On a suspiciously quiet night, the carriage ran towards its destination, the Moonlake casino.
The lights in the distant back alley flickered.
