I Picked Up the Trash Others Threw Away - Chapter 33.2
Chapter 33.2
Trish, who was still staring at my bright face, touched my hands and muttered.
“It’s really amazing, Audrey.”
“What is?”
“You talk about difficult and nearly impossible things like you’re sure you can do them. And you do them somehow. No matter what others say.”
His whispering voice certainly harbored a different kind of warmth that was nothing like when I first met him.
Maybe we had built up a detestable affection while spending time together, or maybe we had become too immersed in our fake couple act without even realizing it.
Even though I knew I shouldn’t feel excitement, my heart was pounding like a stone being dropped.
“That’s what’s amazing. You say that even someone incapable of being saved, like me, can change, so it makes me a little hopeful.”
I wanted to ask him what exactly that meant, but I swallowed the words before they escaped my mouth.
I shouldn’t have any futile fantasies about Trish’s meaningless words. After all, he was a man known for deceiving and seducing women with his sweet words.
‘Aside from him becoming a better person than he is now, a contract is a contract.’
“I just said I’d help you. The one who has to take the lead and try to change is you, Trish. If you have expectations, you should live up to them.”
“But I don’t even know where to start.”
“You could start with your words and behavior. If you change your tone and attitude, you will naturally change your behavior and habits.”
Though I said it lightly, Trish nodded with surprising seriousness.
“Fix my attitude first. Got it.”
“But if you act too different from usual, it can actually backfire…”
“Don’t worry about that. Acting is my specialty, right?”
“It’s not just about words, it’s about being a better person from the bottom of your heart.”
“Even pretending to be better might actually lead to real change, right? Like you said.”
I didn’t deny his words.
He made a refreshed expression as if he had made up his mind, took the paddles again, and began to row the boat back to the pier.
I still hadn’t fully grasped Trish’s troubles and his past, but at least now I could understand why he was so uncomfortable around his family.
Since I had a similar experience, I was able to understand him better, so maybe we could get along quite well. Maybe we could stay good friends after all this.
‘Though I doubt anyone will believe that a divorced man and woman would remain friends.’
When the boat reached the pier, Trish, who had stepped out first, extended his hand to me.
As I took his hand and carefully got off the boat, the attendants, who had been waiting, took the basket I was holding and wiped the damp hem of my skirt with a towel.
They were all smiling pleasantly, and the servant who seemed to be the oldest spoke in an excited voice.
“It’s good to see the Young Master enjoying himself for the first time in a long time. You must really love the Young Lady.”
“Of course I do. Why else would I marry her?”
“When we heard the news of the wedding, we all wanted to attend the ceremony. But we couldn’t go because our job is to guard this place.”
When they asked if we were here for our honeymoon, Trish gave a vague yes while responding appropriately to the conversation.
Except for knights like Allen, the servants of the main house were cold towards Trish, but the servants of the villa were clearly fond of him.
Was it because of the pleasant memories he made while living here as a child?
I watched him silently as I followed behind.
As I told them I would take a bath since I had returned from a walk outside, the servants showed me to the room I would be using and helped me undress.
The servant who came to help with the bath was a warm-looking middle-aged woman.
“I’m Mariella, Young Master Trish’s former nanny. I took care of him when he was young.”
Mariella checked the temperature of the bath water with an experienced gesture and began sharing stories of Trish’s childhood.
