Chapter 48.1

While April was diligently making hand-drip coffee, she could feel Claude’s gaze fixed on her the entire time. He stared so intently that the side of her face tingled under the weight of his eyes.
Struggling to focus on the coffee, she finally asked as soon as she finished brewing.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Can’t I even look at it?”
“If you keep staring at me like that, my face is going to wear out, so there’s an extra charge for that.”
“Extra charge?”
“Yes. Because my face is precious.”
It was meant to be a joke, but Claude didn’t laugh. Feeling awkward, April mumbled under her breath.
“Well, it’s not like you can’t look, but… usually, you’d be doing paperwork no matter what I’m doing.”
She glanced at the mountain of paperwork stacked in front of Claude. Since she had entered, he hadn’t processed a single document.
“Hm.”
Claude responded with a short sound, whether it was a sigh or a grunt of acknowledgment, and then fell silent. Deciding not to press further, April placed the coffee in front of him.
“I tried casting a little spell to help you sleep better, but I’m not sure if it will work. I hope you’ll be able to get some rest.”
“Are you that scared of me?”
“Pardon?”
“Why have you been trembling in front of me since earlier?”
“Ah…”
April quickly hid her slightly shaking hands behind her back.
‘Did he notice?’
She thought her trembling had been subtle, but it must have been obvious to Claude’s keen eyes. Forcing a calm smile, she replied.
“Isn’t it more strange not to be nervous? I was hired to serve you a special coffee, Your Grace, but I couldn’t do that. What if I get fired? I don’t have anywhere else to go.”
“Don’t worry too much about that. We’ll figure something out.”
“I hope so, too.”
April managed a calm smile and placed the coffee cup in front of Claude. However, instead of drinking, he rested his chin on his hand and gazed up at her, ignoring the freshly brewed coffee.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Lily, I really don’t like it when someone cries in front of me.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
“And I especially don’t like seeing you cry.”
“Yes?”
For a moment, April thought she might have misheard him, but Claude immediately repeated his words.
“I said, I especially don’t like seeing you cry.”
“Um, so…”
Why? The question lingered at the back of her mind, but she couldn’t bring herself to ask. She wasn’t sure what kind of answer Claude might give.
‘…Does that mean he cares about me? Or does he just not want to see me cry?’
Her mind was racing with questions, but April couldn’t say anything. Then Claude, noticing her lips twitching, let out a faint smile.
“So, don’t ever cry in front of Zenon Olson either.”

“Hmm, so you’re saying you suddenly can’t use magic anymore?”
The next day, in Claude’s drawing room.
The wizard April had seen at the café in the Saran territory carefully examined her.
After asking for permission, he took her hand and began to infuse mana into it. A cool yet unpleasant sensation started at her fingertips and traveled up her arm. It was a feeling she had experienced once before. However, the unpleasant sensation coursing through her body abruptly stopped as soon as it reached her shoulders. It was different from the last time when the sensation had spread through her entire body.
The wizard frowned, letting out a small groan. Sensing that something was wrong, April cautiously asked.
“What’s the matter?”
The wizard, hesitant to speak, finally opened up when Claude urged him with a pointed look.
“The flow of mana is blocked.”
“The flow of mana?”
“Yes. It seems someone has deliberately blocked it. But who would do such a thing…?”
April immediately knew who it was.
‘…It must be Zenon Olson.’
She recalled her encounter with Zenon two days earlier, where he left her with a cryptic remark.
〈 Don’t use the word ‘never.’ You never know how things in this world might turn out. 〉
Why had he been so confident when he said that? As if there was some inevitable reason they would meet again. Coincidentally, after encountering Zenon Olson, Claude hadn’t been able to sleep. Could there be a connection between the two events? Moreover, Zenon had suspiciously touched her wrist as well.
“So, to use magic again, we need to unblock the flow.”
That seemed straightforward. April extended her hand to the wizard again.
“Then, please unblock it.”
The wizard looked troubled.
“Well, that’s not something I can do.”
