Chapter 43.1
“Is this a drink developed by the Duchy of Winterville?”
“We’re planning to open a cafe soon with investment from the Winterville family, and this is the cafe’s signature menu item.”
“What about this cake? I like how it melts in my mouth and the bitterness of the espresso.”
“It’s a cake called tiramisu. The name comes from the fact that eating it makes you feel good with its sweet taste.”
“I’ll definitely visit when it opens!”
“Yes, we’re planning to open on Beris Street, so you should be able to find it easily.”
Her heart swelled with pride. What could be more fulfilling than seeing people enjoy the drinks she made? April was smiling cheerfully and continuing to serve the drinks that Edmund had made.
“The Duke of Winterville and Young Lord Asher Winterville are entering!”
The servant announced loudly.
As everyone’s attention turned to the entrance, Claude and Asher entered the hall.
April stopped serving and fixed her gaze on Claude. He had styled his hair neatly back, like Asher, instead of the usual casual look. He wore a gray vest over a white dress shirt, and on top of that, he had a black jacket embroidered with golden thread. Even though the embroidery wasn’t very flashy, all eyes were focused on him.
The bright chandelier lights cast just the right amount of shadow on his already three-dimensional face, creating an expression tinged with melancholy.
And those eyes—how intense they were. The gaze, as sharp as a well-forged sword, had the power to overwhelm people even with just a fleeting glance.
When Claude, who was looking around the audience, finally made eye contact with April, he lifted one corner of his mouth slightly and smiled. At first glance, it seemed like a sneer, but April, who had seen him up close before, knew that it was a sign of him being in a good mood.
Feeling good? Just because he saw her?
‘Is he happy because he saw me?’
As soon as she thought about it, her heart began to race. Claude’s gaze showed no sign of moving away from her, and now her face was starting to flush. April lowered her head deeply and stared at her heart, which was beating vigorously against its will, or more precisely, on the left side of her chest where the heart was.
‘Why are you racing like that? Could it be that I’m falling for Claude right now…?’
April shook her head vigorously.
It couldn’t be. It wasn’t as if there weren’t men around, and there was no way she could like someone as arrogant as Claude.
‘Although, I do seem to like his face…’
Still, it couldn’t be. There was no way she could like Claude!
As April was almost in a state of denial, Claude, standing on the podium with Asher, surprisingly began to deliver a normal greeting.
“Thank you all so much for taking the time to attend my nephew Asher’s birthday party.”
There was a cheer of excitement. Claude, raising his hand to quiet the applause, continued speaking.
“As some of you may already know, Asher is the only child of my late brother, Leonard Winterville, and my only nephew. Therefore, I, Claude Winterville, hereby formally declare him as the successor of the Winterville family.”
People began to murmur. Some, like April, were delighted, but most were either surprised or in disbelief. Naturally, there were also those who opposed it.
“Duke, is it really okay to decide your successor so lightly?”
“That’s right. A little more carefully—”
“Perhaps the Duke should reconsider this decision later…”
Among them, there was one voice that caught April’s attention. She turned to look in the direction of the sound.
‘It’s Zenon Olsen. He’s here as expected.’
Zenon, whom she hadn’t seen for a few months, hadn’t changed much. He was opposing the unilateral selection of the successor with a slightly red face.
April hid as far away as possible in a corner, trying not to be noticed by him.
Claude raised his hand again.
“I don’t think that’s something we should discuss here.”
He then stared at each person who opposed him, raising one corner of his mouth in a smile.
‘Oh, that’s the expression he makes when he’s in a bad mood!’
April held her breath, feeling as if she was being scolded for no reason.
“If you have something to say, you can come see me later and say it yourself.”
Sure enough, at that moment, all the noise in the hall vanished, leaving a chilling silence.
‘Of course, there’s no one who would dare say such things in a private audience with Claude.’
While April shook her head, Claude, seemingly satisfied, nodded slightly and raised his glass as he parted his lips again.
“Instead, everyone, raise your glasses. Let’s not think about anything else today and celebrate my nephew’s birthday.”
No one would dare to protest with him speaking so firmly. The guests quickly followed suit and raised their glasses. Then, they all shouted, ‘Cheers!’
Next, candles were placed on the birthday cake. It was the three-tiered cake that Asher had wanted so much. The little boy, with a flushed face, blew out the candles while listening to people sing the birthday song. Since the birthday cake was also sliced and distributed to the guests, admiring exclamations erupted among those who tasted it.
