He took the sword back from Mrs. Danvers. She let out a small sigh of relief, though her relief was short-lived as Claude’s next action made her tense up again. It was because, this time, he completely unsheathed the sword.

He muttered while looking at the sharp blade of the sword.

“So you were just disciplining Asher by calling him a mess. Isn’t that right?”

“Y-Yes. Of course, it was part of the discipline. As you might know from your own lessons as a child, I only gave advice to the Young Master and meant nothing else.”

“What are we going to do about this?”

As Claude brought the blade of the sword close to Mrs. Danvers’ neck, April let out a muffled scream and covered Asher’s eyes.

“I’ve never heard such excuses.”

The blade sank into her neck, creating a bright red line as a drop of blood trickled down the sword. Mrs. Danvers, who was trembling, stiffened her neck to avoid being cut further by the sword.

“To insult Asher is to insult Winterville, and to insult Winterville is to insult me.”

April thought this was very much like Claude. It meant he couldn’t tolerate insults to himself more than to Winterville. However, she didn’t dislike his arrogance today—declaring that Winterville was essentially him. In fact, she wanted to cheer for him inwardly.

‘Go on. The winning side is our side. Of course, we’re going to win because Claude is on our side.’

“No, I was doing it for Winterville…”

Mrs. Danvers quickly tried to justify herself, but it didn’t work.

“Insulting Winterville’s successor for the sake of Winterville? Doesn’t that sound strange to you?”

Mrs. Danvers, with her eyes rolling around nervously, opened her mouth with a voice that was cracking from fear.

Claude lifted his sword. He skillfully sheathed his sword and handed it back to the knight, instructing him.

“Take her away.”

“D-Duke!”

Mrs. Danvers desperately crawled over and grabbed Claude’s pants.

“Please, just forgive me this once. I’ll live quietly without being noticed by the Duke again.”

“Oh, didn’t you know?”

Claude gripped her chin tightly, enough to make it feel like he might crush it.

“I’m not that merciful.”

He then gestured towards the knight.

“Why aren’t you taking her away?”

“Understood.”

“Duke, please have mercy…!”

Mrs. Danvers continued to shout in protest as she was dragged away by both arms.

Without batting an eye, Claude approached Asher. April, who saw this, carefully removed her hand from covering the child’s eyes. As Asher flinched slightly and then bowed his head deeply, Claude gently held the little boy’s cheek with a more careful touch than before.

“There’s quite a bit of swelling.”

There was no customary question about whether it hurt. However, April now realized that this was Claude’s way of expressing concern.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

The child hesitated.

“I thought I would be a nuisance to my uncle.”

There was no way Asher, who was still learning, could use the word ‘nuisance’ so appropriately on his own. It was likely that Mrs. Danvers had said something along those lines to him.

Claude must’ve noticed what April had noticed, too, because he frowned.

“It’s more of a nuisance to me that you’re doing this.”

April touched her forehead.

“Duke.”

Claude glanced at her once before changing his tone. He looked at Asher, who was completely intimidated.

“There isn’t a single thing you could do to be a burden to me.”

“Really…?”

“That’s right. So just remember that you’re always the heir of the Winterville family.”

“Yes.”

Asher nodded obediently, even though he still didn’t quite understand very well yet. Talking about power and succession may still be difficult for a child.

Instead, April asked a question suited to the child’s level.

“Now, Asher, what do you want as a birthday present? Do you still want to go home?”

Asher shook his head vigorously. The child exclaimed with a much brighter expression.

“I want hot chocolate!”

“That’s all?”

“Yes! Hehe.”

April smiled along with the child. She wanted to protect this child’s innocence forever.
