I Didn't Lull You to Sleep Only for You to Be Obsessed With Me - Chapter 80

Chapter 41.1
This was indeed like Claude, but April thought differently.
“Think of Asher!”
“Asher?”
“Of course, it’s good to question Mrs. Danvers as the Duke suggested, though do you think she will admit her fault?”
“….”
“But still, the Duke will dismiss Mrs. Danvers, right? If so, wouldn’t there be rumors that she was dismissed based only on circumstantial evidence, without concrete proof?”
Claude smirked.
“Would they dare?”
April, feeling frustrated, lightly pounded her chest with her fist.
“Of course, even though no one would dare openly gossip about the Winterville family, the rumors would still spread secretly. In that case, it’s Asher’s image that would suffer. As it is, the entire social circle is already focused on him!”
“Hmm.”
Seeing Claude deep in thought, she belatedly realized she was holding onto his arm and quickly took a step back before opening her mouth again.
“Anyway, I think we need concrete evidence, at least for Asher’s sake.”
“Do you have something in mind?”
“Yes.”
She shared the idea she had been thinking about before she came here. After hearing it, Claude nodded in satisfaction.

The next day, wizards under Claude’s orders installed eavesdropping spells in Asher’s study room. April and Claude listened in on the conversation from the adjacent room while the child was in class.
[ Today, we will learn how to walk properly. ]
[ Yes. ]
April felt that Asher’s voice sounded more timid than usual, but she decided to keep listening for now.
[ Straighten your back. You shouldn’t hunch your shoulders forward. ]
[ …Yes. ]
The conversation continued normally. Although Asher, who was usually reserved, seemed a bit quiet, there was nothing unusual about the lesson.
‘Am I mistaken? Is Mrs. Danvers really innocent?’
There was nothing unusual, and April was beginning to think that perhaps she had been mistaken.
Then, all of a sudden, there was a sharp sound—a slap, the sound of flesh striking flesh.
Startled, she jumped to her feet. Claude, seeing that she was about to cry out, quickly shushed her. April, neither sitting nor standing completely, listened intently to the conversation coming from the magic sphere in an awkward position.
[ This is a mess. How can you call yourself the heir of Winterville when you can’t even correct the most basic way of walking? ]
Again, there was the sound of something striking—slap, slap.
[ It seems it would be quicker to find a new heir than to fix the Young Master. ]
[ …. ]
[ Why don’t you tell the Duke right now that you’d like to return to where you came from? ]
Claude slowly rose to his feet after hearing that.
It felt like permission to take action, so April dashed out of the room. Without hesitation, she flung open the door to the study room. Mrs. Danvers, who had been hurling verbal abuse under the guise of discipline, glared at her with fierce eyes.
“Miss April, can’t you see we’re in the middle of a lesson? Haven’t you learned basic manners? This is why uneducated people are so…”
“Get out of the way!”
April pushed Mrs. Danvers aside and looked for Asher. She froze the moment she found the child. It was because his once pale cheeks, white as flour, were now flushed red. There was even a long, bright red scratch as if he had been scratched with her fingernails.
The sound she had heard earlier had been the sound of a slap in the face.
“This, this…”
Even though she wanted to scream in anger, April was so furious that no words came out. Part of her wanted to say something like ‘Beep, beep, beepbeepbeep,’ but Asher was listening, so she couldn’t bring herself to use such harsh words. Instead, Claude, who had already followed behind, stepped forward in her place.
Mrs. Danvers turned pale when she saw Claude.
“D-D-Duke.”
“What on earth is going on?”
A force unlike anything April had ever experienced was unleashed onto Mrs. Danvers, who trembled violently and, in the end, couldn’t bear it and collapsed to the floor. As Claude gestured to the guard standing behind him, he took the sword handed over by the guard and used the tip of the sword to lift Mrs. Danvers’ chin.
“I instructed you to educate Asher, but I didn’t instruct you on anything else.”
“I-I-I don’t understand what you’re talking about…”
Claude’s eyes flickered, and he glanced at Asher as if he couldn’t see her. Despite her trembling, Mrs. Danvers said everything she needed to say.
“That’s Young Master…”
“Are you implying that Asher did this to himself? Even if that were the case, it would still be a problem. What a clichéd excuse.”
