Chapter 54.2
Zenon grinned, smoothly chiming in.
“Come on, Lily. The Count is practically begging here. Just forgive him and come back.”
April yanked her hand free with all her strength. As she did, she rifled through the memories of her past.
‘There’s not a single good memory.’
Count Renoen had adopted April purely for appearances. He and his wife only wanted the reputation of being kind-hearted nobles who graciously took in an unfortunate child. When in reality, April had been completely neglected in the Renoen household.
While she received just enough education to meet the minimum requirements for nobility, neither the Count, his wife, nor their children ever treated her as part of the family.
‘I hardly ever saw Count Renoen and his wife. We even ate separately.’
She had always been an outsider in that house.
‘No, I was more like an intruder.’
Even without knowing how things played out in the original story, April would have walked away from that house on her own.
For a moment, she felt the emotions of the young April—the little girl who longed for love but was only ever met with neglect and hurt. As an orphan, she had once dreamed of having a family, but if that was what family meant, she wanted nothing to do with it.
“You seem to be misunderstanding something. I have zero attachment to the Renoen family, and I have no intention of ever going back.”
“April!”
“And Zenon, I’m not going back to you either. We’ve already broken off our engagement, so stop clinging like this.”
“What? Clinging?”
Zanon’s voice rose sharply, his face flushing red in an instant.
“You crawled to my cousin Claude just to make me jealous, but that’s enough. I’ve tolerated your antics until now, but this is where it ends.”
“Think whatever you want. I just don’t want anything to do with you.”
“April!”
“Lily!”
Both the Count and Zenon started shouting. Surprised, April immediately hushed them with a sharp ‘Shh.’
“Be quiet. Did you forget this is my cafe?”
She stood up.
“Since the conversation is over, I’d appreciate it if you left now. If you come back again, I’ll report you for interfering with my business.”
Zenon was upset, but Count Renoen looked even more shaken. He grabbed his neck and stumbled slightly.
“April, how could you do this to me…”
Remembering that Count Renoen had at least raised her, April kept her farewell as polite as possible.
“Well then, goodbye, Count.”
Just as she was about to step out of the break room, Zenon seized her wrist, his jaw tightening as he spoke.
“Where do you think you’re going? We’re not done talking.”
“That hurts, let go—”
As April struggled to twist her wrist free, someone suddenly entered the break room and seized Zenon’s arm with a grip strong enough to nearly break it.
“Uugh.”
“What do you think you’re doing?”
April flinched at the familiar voice and spun around. Standing there was Claude, his face colder than she had ever seen before.
“You again, Claude?”
Zinon, with a surprised expression, released April’s wrist.
“No, wait, it’s not what you think. Claude, calm down. I was just—”
“I’ll ask again. What do you think you’re doing to my person, Zenon Olson?”
“Your person?”
Zinon’s reaction was almost comical. His surprised expression quickly darkened, and his face flushed red with anger.
“Just like I thought, the two of you…!”
“What kind of imagination do you have?”
Claude gave a teasing smirk, a look strikingly similar to Asher’s whenever he was up to some mischief. April had never seen that expression on him before, and for a moment, she just stared at him blankly.
“Lily is the owner of a cafe I invested in. That makes her my person, doesn’t it?”
“Aha, that’s what you meant. For a second, I thought…”
“And even if there was something special between Lily and me, why would that be any of your business?”
Claude carefully wrapped his arm around April’s shoulder.
“You’re nothing to her anyway.”
“I—!”
Zenon seemed ready to shout in protest but instead sighed, shifting his gaze between April and Claude before he spoke again.
“Fine, Lily. I get it.”
“Then…”
“But I’m not giving up. Just wait. The Renoen family will submit an official statement to the imperial court saying they have no intention of disowning you. Once that’s done, the Count will formally announce our engagement.”
“Go ahead and try. I’ve already made it clear that I intend to be disowned.”
“We’ll see if that’s possible. Let’s go, Count.”
Zenon led the reluctant Count Renoen away and left.
“Ah…”
April’s energy drained in an instant, and she sank into a chair as if her legs had given out. Claude carefully steadied her by the shoulders.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes, my legs just gave out a little, that’s all.”
She glanced up at him and let out a weary smile.
“Are you stalking me or something, Duke?”
“Stalking?”
“No, it’s just… you always seem to appear whenever something happens to me.”
At that, Claude seemed a bit taken aback, which was unusual for him.
“Did I?”
“Yes.”
“Hmm.”
April watched him as he seemed to be lost in thought, then smiled again.
“It feels a bit embarrassing to say thank you now, but still, thank you.”
“I only did what was natural.”
