Life in the tower was surprisingly pleasant. No, it would be more accurate to say that my quality of life had improved. Mary still attended to my needs as always, while I lazed about, engrossed in the novel Helena had given me.

“Mmm… this is interesting.”

During my visit to the Kanilaen estate, I had made a deal with Helena to procure a limited-edition romance novel titled ‘Isaac’s Spring’. As expected of a popular novel these days, the story was so captivating it was hard to put down.

Oh, hold on. Was it getting a little too captivating? The abundance of steamy descriptions was almost overwhelming.

“Hehe…”

“Miss, why are you laughing so mischievously?” Mary asked, pausing in her chores to shoot me a curious glance.

“Oh, it’s nothing. Just… delving into the profound world of romance, you know?”

“Really? It seems interesting.”

“Want to borrow it when I’m done?”

“Yes! I’d love to explore that world with you!”

‘Good, you want to enter the world of romance too.’

I was thrilled at the prospect of having someone to seriously discuss romance novels with besides Helena.

“Miss, you’ve been smiling so much lately! It’s lovely to see. Has something good happened?”

Something good, huh? Well, a lot of good things had happened in the past few days. Although, they were so embarrassing I wanted to bury them in the deepest recesses of my mind.

“Mistress…”

I could still feel the ghost of Kiris’s lips on mine. Our passionate kiss had left a lingering heat in its wake. My face flushed at the memory, and I felt the corners of my lips twitch upwards.

“S-something like that, Mary.”

“Oh, Miss, are you going to keep secrets from me? I’ve been by your side for so long.” Mary feigned a pout before a knowing smile spread across her face. “Actually, I think I have an idea. You didn’t think I wouldn’t notice the atmosphere between you and Sir Kiris, did you?”

My entire body jolted as if struck by lightning.

‘How did she know?’

And this didn’t seem like a mere guess. Wait a minute… Kiris had just left to meet with Helena about a lead on the monster attack.

“What am I going to do if I die from wanting to see you so much?”

He had murmured those embarrassing words against my skin before kissing my forehead. His lips had trailed down, about to meet mine when Mary suddenly appeared, interrupting us.

‘She saw all of that?’

If that were true, I was going to have to declare this room my final resting place. The sheer mortification would be the death of me!

“Your face is all red… are you sure you’re not coming down with something?”

“That’s… the romance novel! It’s just so passionate.”

“Hmm, you didn’t seem to react this way to the other novels you’ve read…”

“Don’t tell me… you saw everything?”

‘Please, tell me you didn’t!’

But Mary’s next words confirmed my worst fears, pushing me beyond the limits of my ability to cope with embarrassment.

“I had a feeling something was going on, so I was keeping watch just in case an intruder was about. Though, I never would have guessed it was Sir Kiris.”

“…Forget you saw anything. Nothing happened.”

My tone left no room for argument, and Mary, seeming to understand my distress, obediently lowered her head. However, the corners of her lips refused to cooperate, curving upwards into a mischievous smile. Since when did Mary have such an expression? She usually reserved that level of amusement for Snow.

“Of course, Miss. I didn’t see or hear a thing.”

And then, to my astonishment, she covered her mouth with her hands and began jumping up and down.

“Eek! The mistress has finally… succeeded in seducing the Tower Lord…”

She was clearly teasing me now! I quickly averted my gaze from her overwhelming stare and shook my head.

“…Just drop it.”

“You’re amazing, Miss! I’ve always taken pride in serving you, but now I’m even more determined.” Mary placed her hand over her heart, her expression turning serious. “A lifelong contract! My dream is to enter into a lifelong contract with you. I’m incredibly grateful that you took me in as your maid, but I can’t be content with just this!”

“What are you talking about, Mary? We’ve been over this before. A lifelong contract is out of the question.”

“But I can’t give up! Thanks to you, I even got to come to the tower…”

Mary continued to ramble on about why she deserved a lifelong contract.

“I adored Snow, but I can provide the best care and love for it. And Sir Kiris acknowledged my abilities by bringing me here with you.”

She was right about that. Honestly, part of the reason I hadn’t hired any other maids besides Mary was that she was just that good at her job.

“I’ll even take care of your children!”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself!”
