Side Story 31

“Sera, Oppa asked if you could meet him near the garden.”
“Hyung said he’ll be waiting there. It seems he has something to say.”
Near the garden of the Star Palace, Sera was waiting for Helios with a pouty face.
It had been a week since Helios lost his memory. He still had no recollection and had been avoiding her, but since he sent a message through Rosé and Ferre, it seemed he was finally ready to initiate a conversation.
At first, Sera was a bit upset by Helios’s inexplicable behavior, but she never imagined they wouldn’t talk for days on end. Usually, even if she felt slighted or sulky over trivial matters, Helios would quickly apologize and soothe her.
Their arguments usually followed a predictable pattern: 1) one of them would make a mistake, 2) Sera would get upset, 3) Helios would apologize, and 4) Sera would also apologize. Most of their quarrels were trivial and needed just a bit of communication.
But this time, perhaps because he had no memory, Helios seemed to be genuinely ignoring her, not showing his face at all. Even during mealtimes or when they were in the bedroom, he didn’t make any effort to talk to her. Last night, when he just quietly read a book on the sofa at the foot of the bed, she felt so sad that tears welled up in her eyes.
Because of this, Sera knew it was a meaningless battle of pride, but she couldn’t bring herself to initiate the conversation. She could have confronted him about why he didn’t speak to her in the library and then disappeared, but doing so felt like admitting defeat.
There was also an element of fear. What if Helios, without his memory, said he felt uncomfortable around her?
Helios was considerate, so he wouldn’t say it outright, but she would pick up on the subtle cues in his tone, which would hurt her even more.
Of course, this argument had a predetermined outcome. The mages said the antidote would be ready soon, so Helios would probably return to normal and apologize. Sera had even prepared what she would say to him when that time came.
However, there was no reason not to try to improve their relationship now. If he initiated the conversation, she was ready to apologize for sulking and not being more considerate of his memory loss.
Rosé and Ferre had been watching her and Helios closely, and rumors of their quarrel had started spreading around the palace. It was time to reconcile somehow.
So Sera firmly believed that Helios had called her today to apologize. She was ready to forgive him with an open heart.
Until she saw him and heard him say,
“I heard Ferre got hurt. But why are you here, Empress?”
* * *
Helios had heard from Jean that Ferre had hurt his leg while climbing a tree in the Star Palace’s garden, so he rushed to find his siblings.
But unexpectedly encountering Sera there, he froze on the spot.
“I heard Ferre got hurt. But why are you here, Empress…?”
Something felt off. There was no way the palace servants would leave an injured child in the garden. And on top of that, Jean had rushed over with a very serious expression, causing Helios to run without thinking.
He was out of breath, and even the servants who were subtly backing away didn’t make sense. Just a little thought revealed too many inconsistencies.
Rosé, Ferre, Jean, and the servants—it seemed they were all in on it together.
Helios knew his siblings were worried about his relationship with Sera not being the same due to his memory loss caused by the magic potion they made. But he didn’t expect them to go this far.
“It seems Your Majesty was tricked by Their Highnesses as well. His Highness Ferre is fine. He and Her Highness Rosé just came to tell me that Your Majesty was waiting here.”
Sera appeared to be in a similar situation.
“Ah, I see. I’ll make sure to tell Rosé and Ferre not to do something like this again.”
“Yes, Your Majesty. If you have nothing else to say, I’ll take my leave now.”
Sera spoke curtly, bowed, and turned sharply.
