Side Story 27

—

After becoming empress, Sera frequently visited the palace library. Reading and writing books had been her hobbies since before her marriage, but she chose the time between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM because no one else visited the palace library during that hour.

It seemed it all started with a chance encounter with Helios. They must have each gone to the library for work-related reasons. The palace library housed various resources, and their duties often led them to visit.

However, on that fateful day in the library, Sera realized something far more significant than the library’s value as an archive—the library was the midpoint between their respective workspaces in the vast palace.

A slight change of scenery improved their work efficiency, and they used this as an excuse to meet at the library for frequent dates. Eventually, their lunchtime visits became a daily routine, and the library earned a reputation as the emperor and empress’s dating spot, ensuring it was deserted even by a single ant.

But today, Sera visited the library for a different reason. She had dismissed the maids and knights who tried to accompany her. Perhaps, feeling empty due to Helios’s memory loss a few days ago, she wanted to find traces of him here.

The image of Helios’s eyes, looking at her as if she were a stranger, remained vividly in her mind.

Those round, rabbit-like eyes!

Even now, thinking of that moment made her heart feel like it was sinking to the ground.

“Pardon me, but… what kind of relationship do we have…?”

When she first heard those words, Sera had thought he was joking. Since their marriage, Helios had often teased her with mischievous pranks. Although his words were entirely different from his usual early morning jokes, she had initially taken it as a simple jest.

But when she tried to snuggle into his arms, Helios was genuinely startled.

“Married…? The two of us?”

Only then did she realize something was wrong. He even had difficulty looking at her in her nightgown and eventually wrapped her tightly in blankets, leaving only her face visible.

“Um, first of all, it would be better to wrap yourself up like this.”

“Haaaa.”

Sera let out a deep sigh and closed her eyes. She felt suffocated. The thought that such a loving husband was treating her like a stranger was hard to believe.

Even when she simply called him ‘Heli’, not ‘Your Majesty’, he would flinch and turn his head sharply. She knew he was busy, but he seemed to come to the bedroom later and later each night.

A sudden wife. One he had never met before.

It must be awkward and difficult for him.

While she understood his feelings, Sera couldn’t hide her sadness. Helios had always been an exceptionally warm husband, which made it even harder.

“At least it’s a relief they can make an antidote.”

Still, there was room for some positive thinking. While the twins had caused a significant accident, they hadn’t threatened the safety of Helios or the imperial family. Of course, Rosé and Ferre were severely scolded and had to write three apology letters promising never to do such a thing again, along with being grounded.

The mages said Helios’s memory loss could be easily resolved with the antidote. Although Helios seemed worried that it might take too long to make the antidote, Sera believed that even if it took a year or more, the important thing was that the problem could be solved.

Sera had already gone through such difficult times with Helios through the years, and those experiences had made her resilient. The key was that they could overcome any challenge together.

“It will be okay.”
