“Ferre, so this is the potion?”
“Uh-huh. That’s right.”
Rosé carefully observed the transparent liquid in the cup and then shook it lightly in front of her eyes. The liquid, which filled the cup halfway, sloshed around, hitting the sides.
It had no smell and wasn’t sticky. No matter how she looked at it, it seemed just like water.
Placed in a handle-less clear glass, anyone would believe it was water.
“This is the concentration-enhancing potion that is supposed to help you get perfect scores on all your exams!”
“Yeah. I discovered it in a book I secretly borrowed from the Imperial Library!”
But yes, although it looked like water, it wasn’t. After days of contemplating, they had made the potion—the magic potion rumored to significantly boost memory retention to the extent that you could remember everything you read and excel in studies after just one sip.
It was not too long ago that the academy had been established in the empire. Since Sera became the empress, an educational institution that taught multiple students at once, rather than one-on-one tutoring, had been founded. Sera had said that the academy would facilitate more learning and friendships, making it essential for educating many people.
Rosé and Ferre didn’t fully understand the significance of her words, but they at least sensed that the academy was a good place. They could see friends like Lily and Edward every day. It wasn’t that one-on-one lessons were boring, but studying with friends seemed to double the fun.
However, the two had one complaint.
Despite the overall satisfaction with the academy, there were just too many assessments!
Their teachers said there were no formal exams, but Rosé and Ferre knew better. Every activity in class was being evaluated.
Rosé and Ferre wanted to excel. They wanted to produce good results to make Sera and Helios proud and to be worthy members of the imperial family.
Last week, Rosé and Ferre happened to hear a rumor.
“There’s a secret magic potion book in the Imperial Library!”
“Really?”
“Yes, my brother works in the Imperial Magic Department. Besides, that book contains a recipe for a potion that clears your mind. Isn’t that exactly what we need?”
At first, they weren’t interested even after hearing the rumor. Even if the book existed, they wouldn’t be able to make the potion themselves. Such potion-making classes were for older, more advanced students.
However, their minds changed a few days ago while studying the multiplication table. The table went up to nine, and their teacher said they had to memorize up to 9×9.
The multiplication table was incredibly difficult. Although they roughly understood it, effortlessly recalling something like 7×8=56 was hard, even after intense mental effort.
Of course, they hadn’t slacked off from the start. They sang multiplication songs under Sera and Helios’s guidance and practiced asking and answering questions through the night.
But how could this be? They kept forgetting everything by the next day!
The mention of an exceptionally rare pop quiz by their teacher added more pressure. This couldn’t go on.
“You know how hard it was for me to make this, right, Rosé? I was so nervous. I hid the ingredients and ladles under the bed every day. I thought the maids would find them! Even Hyung and Sera were asking why I wasn’t coming out of the Star Palace these days.”
“You weren’t the only one having a hard time. I was the one keeping watch to make sure no one came into the room, and I secretly picked herbs from the school and palace gardens, didn’t I?”
Over the past few days, the two had gone to the library, covered in dust, searching for that tome. And they really found that there was a magic potion that could enhance memory retention.
Of course, the process of making the potion was not smooth. Rumors were already circulating in the Star Palace that ladles and bowls kept disappearing. And while Rosé was gathering ingredients in the garden, she overheard the gardeners talking about how they might need to spray pesticides or insect repellent because it seemed like there were pests in the palace garden.
“But Rosé, are we sure this is safe? This is the first time we’ve did this. What if we made a mistake?”
