Helios changed into less conspicuous clothing and truly took Sera out on a date, insisting that people would just think they saw someone who looked similar, not the emperor himself. Beyond that, he chose to bring only a minimal number of guards with him.
Luckily, as Helios had predicted, no one on the streets recognized them. Although some passersby gave them curious glances, everyone seemed to think it unlikely for the emperor to be out and about in such plain attire. So, it’s like they were just any ordinary couple.
Sera and Helios walked hand in hand through the streets, filled with the essence of spring. The streets, showered with cherry blossoms, seemed as if spring snow was falling.
“It’s spring.”
“Feels good to be outside, doesn’t it?”
Losing herself in the fluttering white petals, Sera nodded in agreement to Helios’s remark.
Wherever they went, the atmosphere of spring filled their hearts to the brim.
Eventually, they stopped by a candy store, filled with the sweet aroma that attracted both children and adults alike.
“See anything you like?”
Helios gestured for Sera to pick whatever she wanted.
After squinting her eyes and pondering for a moment, Sera looked up at him seriously.
“Do you have money today?”
Caught off guard by her question, Helios’s eyes wavered. Surprised by his uncertain gaze, Sera pressed for confirmation.
“Really? You don’t have any money?”
Helios touched his face with one hand, then cautiously nodded. It seemed the wealthiest emperor had once again forgotten to bring money with him.
Not this again.
Memories of buying those expensive scoops of ice cream at the imperial villa with her own money came flooding back, and Sera sighed deeply.
Then, Helios hurriedly jingled the coins in his pocket, revealing the truth before it was too late.
“I brought some today.”
“Were you teasing me?”
“I guess you could say that.”
Helios quickly apologized in her ear, saying, “Sorry for teasing you.”
Sera, who had been trying to estimate the amount of money in his pocket until just now, finally burst into a resigned laugh.
Helios bought a few types of candy that Sera pointed out, along with some caramels for Rosé and Ferre.
Since the candy store wasn’t exorbitantly priced, buying a few items wasn’t too expensive.
Perhaps that’s why when more change was given back than expected, Helios refused to take it.
The shopkeeper seemed very pleased with Helios’s generosity, but Sera was a bit perplexed watching this.
Is this how wealthy people think? There was more change than the cost of the candy.
Helios then led Sera to a comfortable bench near a fountain, considering that her legs might be tired. Sera laughed merrily, finding his consideration similar to that of any other couple around.
He kindly peeled the candy wrappers for her.
Following his gesture to open her mouth, a strawberry-flavored candy slipped in.
Delighted by such a simple act, Sera smiled back at him.
As they were enjoying the candy, a ball rolled towards the bench they were sitting on, likely belonging to a child younger than Rosé and Ferre.
Sera bent down to pick up the yellow ball, and a small child approached her with a hesitant voice.
“Miss Fairy?”
Was there a story like ‘The Woodcutter and the Fairy’ in the empire?
Following the child’s words, Sera’s eyes widened as she remembered the correct term.
“Saintess!”
How did they know? Surprised, Sera repeated the word, and the child energetically nodded, confirming it was correct.
“I saw you at the temple.”
The child explained how they knew of her, making Sera scan the area to see if anyone else recognized her, but fortunately, it seemed like the child didn’t know who Helios was.
No one else seemed to be paying them any attention.
“Thank you, Sai…”
Shh. As the child attempted to reveal Sera’s identity again, Helios placed his finger over his lips, shaking his head.
Handing the child a candy along with the ball, the child seemed to understand, nodding in agreement.
“Shh.”
Covering their mouth with a tiny hand, the child whispered and then ran off towards their mother who was calling for them.
Sera watched the child’s departing figure with a warm smile.
“I wanted to keep our promise.”
Caught off guard by Helios’s sudden, calm statement, Sera shifted her gaze from the child back to him.
His face was serene yet incredibly composed.
“You have to keep that promise every day now.”
“Of course.”
Sera, beaming with a smile as bright as the sunny spring day, took his hand.
A smile blossomed on Helios’s face too, mirroring hers.
However, the fluffy, pink-spring atmosphere didn’t last long.
“There! Her Eminence the Saintess!”
Just when they thought the promise was being kept, the child, candy still in mouth, pointed at Sera and shouted.
People’s gazes instantly turned towards Sera and Helios. Some who faintly recognized him began to murmur.
Helios’s guards, who had been hiding, started to show themselves, and Sera and Helios rose from the bench.
Holding Sera’s hand tightly, Helios asked.
“Ready to run?”
