“Saintess, can you please tell us that story again? Please!”
“Saintess, Saintess! Did you really seal a demon inside you?”
“Saintess! Did you really fight a demon and win?”
With their hands clasped together in prayer, the children blinked their earnest eyes at her.
These children, just reaching their double digits in age, were young acolytes in training at the temple, asking her to retell the story they had heard day after day.
“You don’t have to call me that…”
Sera blushed, still not used to being called ‘Saintess’ despite how often it happened. She cleared her throat uncomfortably.
Seven months had passed, including the time she had been asleep and the month she had stayed at the temple.
During this time, the story of how she defeated the demon Belzebuth had spread far and wide, and she had become known as the saintess who saved the world.
“Really, you won’t tell us the story?”
“Yeah! We only wait for the time to meet you, Saintess!”
The adorable little ones eagerly pressed her for the story they so desired to hear, making faces of disappointment when it seemed Sera was hesitant to retell the now all-too-familiar tale.
As Sera tried to evade by wandering around the waiting room, the children followed her like baby chicks, making it a peaceful routine that had formed since she began playing with them out of boredom.
“Saintess! Can I ask you about something else then?”
Seeing that Sera was unlikely to relent, Nancy shifted tactics.
Nancy’s questions always tended to make Sera feel embarrassed, and so she watched the child warily.
“Is it true what they say about you and His Majesty? That you’re… you know?”
Nancy’s eyes widened with anticipation for an answer. Although Sera knew it was no secret among the temple folk, she still found it hard to speak openly about it and coughed awkwardly in response.
“Oh, I heard from Priestess Elena that she saw you and His Majesty hugging!”
“Yeah, and someone saw you two kissing at night!”
“That His Majesty kept visiting you while you were asleep because he loves you…!”
“Stop!”
Sera, her cheeks flaming red, cut off the children’s conversation detailing the private moments between her and Helios.
While it was true they had shared such moments, hearing them spoken of so candidly was embarrassing.
“That’s… a misunderstanding by the other priests and priestesses. Rumors tend to get exaggerated. Something got in my eye, and His Majesty was just helping me out. That’s what some people might have seen and mistaken.”
Sera repeated a fib she had concocted before, though her face clearly showed she wasn’t convincing.
Unlike with Rosé and Ferre, the younger acolytes including James seemed to buy her explanation, nodding their heads innocently.
“So, you shouldn’t go around saying such things…”
“What things?”
Helios’s voice echoed from afar, causing Sera to stand up abruptly. Helios was standing at the entrance of the waiting room, smiling.
“Is it really His Majesty?”
“I’ve never seen His Majesty in person before!”
“Wow, so handsome…”
The children sitting in front of Sera looked at Helios, then bashfully bowed deeply as a greeting.
Helios returned their greetings with a gentle smile, and before Sera could even catch them, they had already scurried away.
“Heli, I didn’t hear you were coming…”
“I came because I wanted to see you, even though it wasn’t on my schedule.”
Helios had approached quietly and lifted Sera into his arms with a crooked smile, placing her at eye level before greeting her with a brief kiss.
As their soft lips parted, Sera, pretending to be annoyed as she always did, muttered softly.
“Heli, this is why those rumors started. If we keep this up, the whole world will know.”
“It’s okay now, Sera.”
“But…”
Despite being in a place filled with watchful eyes, Helios didn’t hesitate to lean in for another kiss. Ever since she woke up, Helios had made no attempt to hide his feelings for her.
Perhaps the title of the ‘saintess who saved the world’ left no obstacles to hinder their relationship, but showing such public displays of affection was still embarrassing for Sera.
Their breathtaking kisses always stopped just shy of becoming too intense.
Sera looked up at him with longing eyes after catching her breath, and Helios gently pulled her into his embrace.
“What about Their Highnesses?”
“They’re at the palace—they don’t know I’m here today. If they did, they’d have insisted on coming along.”
“Really? You left Their Highnesses behind?”
Sera shook her head in disbelief.
Finding Sera’s incredulous reaction amusing, Helios chuckled lightly, softly setting her down and intertwining their hands.
“Of course. We’re going on a date today.”
