Chapter 7.2

“We just happen to be going the same way.”

“Then take another path. I was here first.”

Lucion quickened his pace, and Edith matched it step for step.

Neither of them knew who started it, but soon enough, they were both running.

“Have you lost it? What’s wrong with you?!”

“I told you, let’s go together!”

“I said no!”

Despite her determination, the distance between them widened.

Lucion was fast, even when sick, and Edith’s poor stamina made it impossible to keep up.

Her reflexes weren’t any better.

“Ahh!”

She didn’t see the rock in front of her, so she tripped over it, tumbling to the ground with a thud.

“Ugh.”

Her knees and hands burned from scraping against the dirt. Awkwardly, Edith pushed herself up, immediately touching her face.

‘Thank God my face is okay.’

The thought of nearly scraping her chin sent a cold shiver down her spine.

By then, Lucion had already disappeared—he must have run off.

Edith sighed as the garden grew quiet again.

“What a bummer. I almost caught up to him.”

Edith glanced down at her battered knees. The skin on one was torn, with bright red flesh showing through the dirt.

It looked painful, but Edith didn’t seem too bothered.

“Oh, I’m bleeding.”

She said casually, brushing the dirt away, when suddenly, a hand grabbed her wrist roughly.

Lucion’s angry face loomed over her.

“Are you out of your mind? What if it gets infected? You can’t just touch a wound like that!”

Lucion scolded, the panic in his voice rising when he saw the blood on her knee.

Without waiting for a response, he pulled out a handkerchief, and Edith watched in a daze as he quickly wrapped it around her injured knee, securing it tightly.

“For now, this will do, but we need to—are you even listening?”

“Gotcha.”

Edith grinned as she clutched the bottom of Lucion’s wrinkled shirt, giving him a beaming smile.

“I won.”

Lucion froze for a moment, caught off guard by her foolish grin. Then he sighed in frustration, running a hand through his hair.

“You idiot!”

Lucion glared at Edith with a scowl on his face. Sighing in resignation, he turned around and crouched slightly.

“Get on.”

“On you, young master?”

“Who else?”

“But you’re weak, young master. What if you collapse because of me?”

“Even when I’m trying to help!” Lucion snapped with irritation.

“I’m heavy, though…”

“You? Stop talking nonsense and just get on.”

She’s so light she looks like she’d get blown away by the wind.

Thinking of how she had fallen over like a flimsy piece of paper, Lucion grumbled,

“I’ve never seen anyone weaker than me.”

“That’s not true. I’m really strong.”

That’s how I survived all those beatings and starvation, Edith thought to herself.

After a brief moment of hesitation, she leaned against Lucion’s back and wrapped her arms around his neck.

Lucion squirmed uncomfortably. “Don’t hold on so tight.”

“I’m scared I’ll fall.”

“Yeah, right. You’re scared of nothing.”

Her knee is torn up, and she didn’t even flinch. But now she says she’s scared? Lucion thought.

“But it’s true…”

This was the first time anyone had carried her on their back, and Edith felt he was being unfair.

As she pouted, a sudden thought crossed her mind, and she licked her lips.

Wait, isn’t this my chance?

Up until now, the only physical contact she’d had with Lucion was holding hands, but now their entire upper bodies were pressed together.

This might be the perfect chance to see if it works.

Smirking to herself, Edith released her power, letting the warmth gently wrap around Lucion’s body like a soft embrace.

Lucion, already familiar with her energy, immediately tensed up when it touched him and yelled,

“Hey! I told you not to do that!”

The more Lucion thrashed, the tighter Edith clung to his neck, pressing herself against him.

“You like it.”

“No, I don’t!”

It seemed like he was about to fling her off any second, but surprisingly, he didn’t. Instead, he adjusted his grip and carried her more securely.

‘He’s kinder than he looks.’

Lucion always said harsh things and kept his guard up, so she hadn’t realized it before, but now it was clear.

He wasn’t as mean as he tried to appear.

The fact that he was carrying her, despite how much he claimed to dislike her, was proof enough.

“Why do you hate it so much? Being warm feels nice.”

And I like it because it cools me down, Edith thought to herself. She listened carefully to his quiet murmur.

“That’s why I hate it. I’ll get used to it.”
