Chapter 79

Translator: Yonnee

—

“Wait just a moment, Roella.”

“Sister, wait!”

Far off, I heard the flustered voices of the two lovebirds trying to catch me, but I pretended not to hear and quickened my pace.

“Look, she’s coming this way.”

“Turn away— Quickly.”

As I approached, those who were sneakily watching hurriedly turned their gaze away.

Yet, they couldn’t help stealing glances at me, even as they tried to look away.

I subtly slowed down my pace amidst the people’s stares.

Finally, when I was far enough from Helena and Demos.

“You said it was only me, Young Duke. What a liar. Still, be happy.”

I murmured wistfully and let a single tear fall.

I didn’t forget to make my lips tremble, as if I was someone who couldn’t hold back the tears—looking as if I was both relieved and saddened by the end of my unrequited love.

Soon, I could hear gasps and whispers from all around.

‘Yes, let them talk. Let them chatter excitedly.’

I covered my pleased smile with my hand and hurriedly ran towards my carriage.

And the next day,

A certain rumor started circulating in high society.

* * *

Café Vérien in the capital,

A popular gathering spot for the nobility.

Hence, rumors in the noble circles often passed through here.

Just like now.

“Did you all hear the story? About the love triangle in front of the bank.”

“Oh, what’s that?”

“You haven’t heard yet? That villainess, Ducal Lady Brietta.”

As soon as the story of Ducal Lady Brietta came up, the listener’s eyes sparkled.

“I know, right? Did she finally cause some trouble?”

The rumors had been dull lately, and it was about time for something exciting.

After all, half of the noble gossip usually involved Roella.

“Not really trouble, but you know how much Lady Brietta fancied Young Duke Killian.”

“Of course, who doesn’t?”

“Right! But it seems the Young Duke has found someone. They were on a date, and she ran into them!”

“No way!”

How utterly thrilling.

“Must have been a scene, right? So, what did she do? Grab hair, slap faces, any nosebleeds?”

The lady put down her teacup, too excited to even drink.

In contrast, the other simply shrugged and took a sip of tea.

Then calmly replied,

“No. She congratulated them.”

“…She did what?”

“Congratulated. Said they made a great couple and declared she’d give up on Young Duke Killian for the honor of her family.”

“Oh, how unexpected. After being so desperately in love, why would she do that?”

As one murmured in confusion, another chimed in.

“The Young Duke’s girlfriend is Helena Dioter.”

“Helena? That’s her cousin, right?”

“Yes, exactly. So, when her cousin started dating him, she stepped back and said she’d give up.”

“My goodness. Who knew she had it in her?”

“It’s well-known that Duke Brietta favors his niece Helena more like his own daughter. Maybe that’s why?”

Everyone nodded, considering the possibility.

The story of Duke Brietta favoring Helena over his troublemaker daughter was quite widespread.

“Lost her father’s attention and now the man too, did she just resign herself to it?”

“Maybe she thought she couldn’t compare.”

At this point, they felt a mix of schadenfreude and pity.

How big a shock must it have been for that nasty villainess to declare her surrender so suddenly?

“Not only that. She even shed tears as she turned her back on the couple.”

“Gasp. She cried?”

That was genuinely shocking.

Roella was notorious for not easily shedding tears.

Since her debut in high society, no one had seen her cry.

It was almost as if she physically couldn’t produce tears…

That’s when it happened.

“Actually, this is a secret, but I was there.”

A noble lady, who had been silent until now, slowly began to speak.

Her secretive tone and the word ‘secret’ instantly captured everyone’s attention.

She satisfyingly gathered the interest of all, revealing a not-so-secret secret she had probably mentioned about a dozen times at other gatherings.

“That woman was murmuring to herself while crying, saying something like ‘You said it was only me. Young Duke, you’re a liar.’”

“My goodness. She said that when they weren’t even dating?”
