Despite Being an Extra, I'm the Villain's Childhood Friend - Chapter 62.1
Chapter 62.1
She set the tray on the table and approached Robert.
“Oh my.”
She smiled warmly, brushing stray leaves from his hair and shoulders. Robert, seemingly embarrassed, quieted down.
“Twelve years old and already so grown up.”
“You’re being sarcastic because I have leaves all over me, right?”
Monica chuckled at his sulky reply.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Whatever.”
It was the same as always: the pouting child and the gently doting adult.
Monica softly stroked the child’s hair. For a maid to touch the young master’s hair like this would be a serious breach of etiquette, but neither of them seemed to mind. To the lonely young Robert, this touch was precious.
It was then that Robert suddenly asked.
“Monica, what do you think about daughters who never marry and live alone?”
“What?”
She blinked, taken aback.
“I mean, Izel could stay single, right?”
“Well… Izel is still so young. I haven’t really thought about it…”
Perhaps it was because of what happened with Young Master Michael earlier that day. The unbelievable rumor that Viscount Karif wanted Izeline as his daughter-in-law had been circulating among the maids all day.
And the fact that this news had infuriated Robert.
Although Monica knew Izeline’s marriage was far in the future, the thought of eventually having to let her daughter go brought a pang of sadness. Maternal emotions welled up, and she replied in a slightly choked voice.
“Well, I’d like to keep her by my side forever.”
“Right? You feel the same, don’t you?”
“….?”
Monica was bewildered by his enthusiastic question. She’d only meant it figuratively, not that she’d literally keep Izeline with her until she became a grandmother… While marriage wasn’t legally mandatory in the Barcan Empire, it was still considered a virtue to marry at a suitable age.
“It’s not like she has to get married.”
Robert, however, seemed determined to keep Izeline single.
“I’m against it too. Absolutely not. It’s too dangerous.”
Emboldened by Monica’s apparent agreement, he declared.
“There are so many guys out there who look decent but are snakes on the inside!”
Monica had been acting strangely. Even though she hadn’t eaten anything unusual, she’d started giggling for no reason and wouldn’t leave, constantly chatting.
“Shall I draw you a bath?”
“No, thanks. I prefer to bathe alone.”
“It seems like just yesterday you were bathing with Izel.”
“Wh-What are you talking about?”
Robert retorted gruffly, his face flushing to the roots of his hair. Now that he thought about it, he couldn’t quite remember how he’d ever bathed with her.
“Get out! I need to wash up.”
“Yes, yes.”
“If you don’t hurry, that idiot Michael might eat all my steak.”
“Considering he’s all brawn and no brains, that’s a distinct possibility.”
“Monica!”
“I’ll leave you to it then.”
Though her lips still curved in a smile, she obediently retreated.
“….”
Robert stared at the closed door, his face still burning with embarrassment, then turned and headed straight for the bathroom.
Splash. Splash.
The bathwater, prepared by the maids, had cooled to lukewarm. However, his flushed skin found the temperature just right.
“Ha. I never would have thought Viscount Karif would…”
He splashed water on his face to cool the heat rising there. The thought of the Viscount having such designs on Izeline was still preposterous.
“It’s a good thing Monica’s against it.”
It was true.
If Izeline didn’t marry, he could stay close and protect her. Come to think of it, if they were to keep their childhood promise of staying together forever, neither of them should marry. But why had Monica giggled and left so abruptly?
