Despite Being an Extra, I'm the Villain's Childhood Friend - Chapter 58.1
Chapter 58.1
Her memory was a blank canvas after the blinding light. Then, she opened her eyes, finding herself inhabiting this body.
Click.
Lost in thought, chin resting on her hand, someone gently opened the library door. Turning, she saw Robert, sweat-drenched from his finished sword practice, entering.
After assessing their mana attributes, Gerald handed them a few more customized textbooks suited to her light and darkness affinities and disappeared. The children then scattered: Izeline went to the study, and Robert and Michael went to the training grounds.
“Lots of studying?”
“It’s manageable since Master Oren excused me from sword training.”
Izeline sighed, her face etched with a hint of resignation. With the start of magic lessons, Oren had heeded Brioche’s request and minimized her sword practice. She had understood his reasoning—it was better to focus on magic.
“He seemed thrilled that a mage might emerge from some backwater village.”
“He probably enjoys my suffering.”
“Well…”
Robert shrugged. Remembering Oren chuckling at the dark circles that reached her chin, she found it hard to disagree.
“Why aren’t you showering first?”
Izeline stared at him, and instead of answering, he pulled a chair next to hers and sat down. The mingled scent of sweat and his natural musk tickled her nose.
“Just…”
Robert hesitated, his lips pursed. He seemed anxious, but perhaps preoccupied with her own concerns, Izeline missed his unease.
She asked casually, a question she often posed when bored.
“How was your sparring today? Did you win?”
“…No.”
The memory of the recent match made him frown. He had never beaten Michael, who was two years his senior, but he had never lost by such a wide margin either. More than anything, he had dropped his sword…
But Izeline remained oblivious to his inner turmoil.
‘Should I cut back on sleep…?’
Looking at the mountain of books, the thought naturally arose. However, she kept it to herself, offering Robert encouragement instead.
“You’re getting closer, though.”
“….”
“You’ll catch up soon. Don’t worry.”
“.…”
“Michael seems to enjoy sparring with you more and more. Having someone his age with similar skills…”
“I’m worried.”
“Worried…? I mean, it’s a good thing…”
“.…”
“.…”
The heavy atmosphere silenced Izeline. His crimson eyes, when they met hers, flickered with anxiety. Robert’s lips parted. The reason he had rushed here without even washing… The reason his sword had wavered, his focus scattered during the sparring session…
“Izeline.”
“Yes?”
“If you become a mage, you’ll have to go to the Magic Tower, right?”
“Well, yes.”
Even as she answered, a sense of unease settled over her. The Magic Tower was located in Ernon. She had chosen to learn magic to stay in Souvri, but ironically, if summoned by the Tower, she would have to return to the capital.
A brief silence fell.
“That hasn’t happened yet.”
Izeline broke the silence.
“It might not happen at all. And even if I’m summoned, it might just be a short visit.”
Would it, though? Participating in the Tower’s research often meant being confined within its walls for years. Of course, many mages weren’t, but…
