Despite Being an Extra, I'm the Villain's Childhood Friend - Chapter 54.2
Chapter 54.2
She frowned, watching intently.
Suddenly, Gerald bent down and picked something up from the ground, slipping it into his pocket. Now she noticed he was following Monica’s path, pausing every so often to retrieve something. The strange thing was that Monica wasn’t dropping anything.
‘Is it just a coincidence that their paths are crossing?’
She tilted her head, puzzled.
Just then, as if sensing her gaze, Gerald abruptly turned his head. Even from that distance, she knew their eyes had met.
“….”
Izeline raised a hand in a casual greeting, her expression deliberately nonchalant. Gerald, momentarily frozen in surprise, quickly regained his composure and walked toward her window. With her room on the second floor, he naturally had to look up.
“What are you doing instead of studying?”
“What? I can’t hear you.”
“Are you studying or not?!”
“Geez! I am!”
She couldn’t help the outburst.
‘It was just a short break.’
Gerald raised an eyebrow, his expression clearly saying, ‘You impudent little thing.’
What, what?
Was he planning to flick her forehead from all the way down there?
A surge of confidence filled her; surely, he couldn’t reach her on the second floor. But unfortunately for her, Gerald was a capable mage. With a complex flourish of his fingers in the air, he began to rise smoothly.
“Whoa…?”
“It’s called levitation magic.”
Thwack!
“Ouch!”
Before she could process her astonishment, a sharp pain shot through her scalp. He’d gotten her good. Tears welled in her eyes.
“Ow…”
“Serves you right.”
“That’s mana abuse! I hope you get mana depletion!”
“You little…! You have no respect for your teacher!”
Having just read about the dangers of mana depletion, Izeline threw her freshly acquired knowledge at him like a curse. Excessive use of magic, she warned, could lead to mana depletion, permanently erasing a mage’s abilities or, in severe cases, even being life-threatening.
At the very least, it proved she was studying.
“But why were you following my mother?”
“Mother?”
“Yes. You kept following her and picking things up.”
“Ah.”
A flicker of something akin to embarrassment crossed Gerald’s face, though it was so fleeting that Izeline wondered if she’d imagined it.
He responded casually, “Who’s following whom?”
“Wasn’t that what you were doing?”
She tilted her head, questioning him.
With a brazen look, Gerald responded.
“I was gathering herbs for my research.”
“Oh…”
So, had their paths crossed by chance?
Still, it was ironic that the ingredients for Krug’s research could be found right in their front yard. Could Robert’s Krug really be cured? It wasn’t part of the original story, so she felt uncertain, even skeptical. However, the prophecy had already deviated slightly, so perhaps this was another change.
Maybe what had once been incurable could now be healed. She recalled their conversation from the previous day.
“So, what price will he have to pay later?”
“That’s classified.”
Izeline had asked on Robert’s behalf, only to be met with Gerald’s blunt refusal.
Knowing his resolute nature, she realized further questions would be futile, so she didn’t press the issue. Still, her curiosity lingered.
Gerald, noticing her continued gaze, narrowed his eyes, silently conveying that her wondering would lead nowhere.
“Study, study. I’ll test you tomorrow morning.”
“Ugh.”
“And let’s figure out your mana attribute.”
“The problem isn’t the attribute, it’s that I might not have any mana at all.”
“There you go again! With that nonsense!”
Gerald snapped, his brow furrowed in annoyance.
‘But it was true, wasn’t it?’
“Forget it. I don’t want to hear it. I’m leaving.”
Izeline watched her teacher descend, a worried look in her eyes. She was so anxious about his reaction tomorrow that she couldn’t concentrate on her studies.
