Chapter 43

“After His Excellency provides me with the precise dimensions, I’ll promptly relay them to the tailor.”

The assistant, or rather Cartiel’s informant, firmly stated, refusing to budge in front of the Duke and Duchess of Argenta’s room. Beside that person, the seasoned tailor of forty-seven years hastily departed, his face flushed red.

“Well, I have pressing matters to attend to, so I shall return to my work.”

‘What a wake-up call! Hahaha!’

The tailor thought as he went away.

In the meanwhile, as the tailor disappeared, Rick, the head of Argenta’s intelligence, didn’t even glance in his direction. His gaze was focused on the Cartiel’s informant.

“May I… may I go? I may not be that tailor’s assistant, but I do similar work.”

One of the assistants opened their mouth.

“Umm, I’m running late…”

Then, another added.

However, the Cartiel’s informant, listening in under the guise of being the tailor’s assistant, had no idea that the man behind them* was contemplating whether or not he should kill them.
[ T/N: As usual in KR novels, extras rarely have their genders specified, so I’ll just use ‘they’ for Cartiel’s informant until it’s specified further. ]

Rick knew they were using Cartiel’s wind powers to hear what was going on inside.

“….”

A sinister smile appeared on Rick’s face. It seemed that even the Duke was also aware of this person’s intentions, wondering what his master would do.

Rick scratched his cheek.

As a loyal servant and the head of Argenta’s intelligence department, he was well aware of the fake Ferro plan. He knew that the two of them didn’t really spend the night together.

However…

“Ah…”

The sound that reached his excessively sharp hearing was undeniably real.

“Hmm?”

Rick’s expression became one of confusion. Was it truly real? Even to an onlooker, it was evident that the sound marked the beginning of a heated night. It was not a tone that could be imitated through mere acting.

As his gaze turned to Cartiel’s informant, the informant had also grown a bit pale and was listening intently.

Look at this d*mn person.

They were probably trying to confirm whether the Duke and Duchess’ relationship was real, so they kept their ears sharp towards the unusual sound(?) for several minutes.

D*mn it.

“I will bring the relevant information soon,” Rick finally spoke up. The smiling Rick and the bewildered gaze of the Cartiel’s informant met.

The other assistants, along with Alors’ informant, had long departed, having obtained all necessary information. Thanks to that, there were only Rick and Cartiel’s informant left in the corridor.

“Ah, um, since it’s urgent, I’ll, um, wait here for now.”

Seeing Cartiel’s informant stammered, his smile grew even brighter. Of course, the sounds in the room were also changing in an unsettling way.

“Just a little more.”

“Like this?”

Even Rick, who knew about them, was confused by the ambiguous sounds. No, what was his master doing? For a moment, doubt crept in, but his unwavering faith soon took over his mind.

Madam Argenta would always do the right thing.

Thud.

Rick, who had come to a swift conclusion, tapped the shoulder of the assistant.

“Just go.”

“But, that’s a bit…”

As they spoke, the conversation inside grew more suspicious. It seemed that they were truly showing a ‘deep connection.’

…Was this part of the plan? Was that right?

Rick’s perplexing words would surely be heard better by that informant from Cartiel.

“… It’s too deep.”

“Even if it hurts, please endure a little longer. It will… get better soon.”

They suddenly heard their soft voice and a moan.

“….”

“….”

The face of the blushing informant was getting redder and redder. On the contrary, Rick’s face bloomed even more brightly.

Should he just kill that person? As he looked at the blushing informant, his mind filled with audacious thoughts. He tried his best not to hear any sounds from inside while thinking of 101 ways a person could accidentally die.

Was it just a fake? Just acting? Was it real? Madam Argenta, what was your plan?

“Just go, okay?”

Whatever it was, it was clear that he shouldn’t leave this person here. As he asserted more strongly, the Cartiel informant eventually retreated.

“U-understood. Hmph.”

Finally, the Cartiel informant turned and walked away.

* * *

Our promise was just to hold hands and sleep. In other words, it was also to ensure that Diello’s lilies never disappear. His words probably meant a pledge to keep that promise.

However…

Thud.

I found myself lying on the bed without realizing it. The sound probably echoed loudly outside as well. There were many people with sharp hearing in this mansion. Without time to be surprised, Diello climbed onto me.

With his strong arms on either side of my head, his shadow filled my field of vision.

“….!”

My startled gaze met his calm gaze. It was a pure gaze, like a clear lake, that didn’t seem to belong to someone who imprisoned others with their arms.

Could it be that my mind had turned dirty? To be able to have a normal conversation in this position… how could he do that? Or was it only because my mind had turned dirty? It was a gaze pure enough to make me doubt myself.

At that moment, he leaned in closer.

Smooch.

His lips touched my forehead, then gently brushed the tip of my nose, making my neck warm.

Could it be…

“Just a moment—”

“Argenta never breaks promises.”

He whispered as if telling me not to be surprised before he caressed my hair.

“Well. I know that, but…”

If he had wanted to do something like this, he would have done it earlier. There had been countless opportunities until now. However, unlike before, when his behaviour seemed clumsy, it was so natural that I was amazed.

“Really… I thought it was real.”

Diello only gave a strange smile in response and then let out a faint laugh. Then, as if worried that someone might hear from outside, he whispered softly in my ear.

“To tell a lie, you have to deceive not only the enemy but even yourself.”

“Well… that’s true.”

That was true, but…

While whispering, he had one hand around my cheek. As heat spread through his large hand, reaching my ear and neck, it felt like he had placed something hot there, even though he didn’t use his fire manipulation ability.

“Still, is it okay to be this… proactive?”

Because of that heat, I asked, bewildered without realizing it. Diello tilted his head slightly as if asking what I meant.

“Well, I guess it’s okay for me to be known as someone proactive.”

…He would probably be evaluated quite differently because of this incident.

“I’m worried that rumors might spread that you couldn’t control your desires and seduce your wife in the presence of your subordinates.”

I responded directly.

Although he himself looked unaffected, my face felt even hotter.

“It’s fine.”

“People might think that you have become more proactive…”

I was about to say that our plan to make people let their guard down might be ruined if that happened. However, my words were buried in his kiss.

“Did you know, Krua?”

When the warmth touched my nose, he whispered.

“I haven’t seemed to be completely infatuated with you on the outside.”

I thought his smile resembled a pure sea, but now, his smile was like a fire in the night that mesmerizes people. After smiling like that, he kissed me again.

The next moment, after looking at me for a moment, he withdrew from me.

“….”

In the blink of an eye, he took out a first aid kit that had been prepared in one corner of the room. As if nothing had happened, he gently held my hand.

Swoosh.

The bandage was unraveled from my hand. The wound, which had been cleaned deeply and had been regularly disinfected and bandaged, was revealed again.

“Ah…”

I made a short sound and instinctively covered my mouth. I was worried the people outside might hear it and misunderstand.

‘No, wait…’

I paused for a moment and quickly lowered my hand.

‘I should just let them misunderstand.’

After all, it was necessary to let them misunderstand. My face turned red at the thought of the misunderstandings I might receive, but it was necessary. Besides, it was even better in this natural situation.

In the meanwhile, Diello muttered.

“The wound is too deep…”

He held up the disinfectant and smiled awkwardly.

“Just endure a little, even if it hurts.”

He whispered softly and dropped the disinfectant on my wound.

“Ah…!”

I made that groaning sound several times, and just as my lips were about to bleed from biting it again…

“I don’t want to see your beautiful lips getting hurt.”

He chuckled lightly and gently held my hand again. Then, after finishing the disinfection, he held up a bandage and asked me.

“Shall I wrap it gently?”

I nodded my head in response.

“Yes.”

If it were tight, the blood wouldn’t flow.

He nodded his head, understanding my words.

Around that time…

Knock, knock.

A knocking sound came from outside.

Knock, knock, knock.

However, the knocking sound came again as if it had something to convey, not waiting for an answer.

Ah.

“It looks like they’re gone.”

Rick was signaling from outside. Diello seemed to have noticed, too, as he let out a low laugh.

“They… heard it, right?”

Diello, who was tidying up the first aid kit, nodded his head.

“Yes.”

“It’s embarrassing, really.”

It was embarrassing to act like this in front of other people. When I covered my face with my hand at the thought, Diello, who had put the box back in place, held something.

“Shall I measure it for you?”

It turned out to be a measuring tape.

“Measure what?”

Without realizing it, I blurted out with an agitated mind, and Diello pointed to my thigh.

“….”

“….”

After a moment of silence, I remembered an important fact.

…Ah, he chased people away to measure my thigh circumference, right?

“I’ll do it myself.”

I quickly took the measuring tape from his hand. It was going to be so embarrassing!

While thinking that, I extended my hand to him.

“Please cover your eyes.”

Instead of covering his eyes, Diello obediently turned around.
