“I heard there were frequent floods and water-related accidents that year—”
Suddenly, a booming voice echoed from outside.

It was Rick.
Startled, I turned towards the door just as it burst open.
“Ma-Madam summoned you?”
The commotion outside prompted me to gesture to Nirua. He opened the door, and Rick bowed hastily.
“Madam, I apologize for the intrusion.”
His face was etched with distress, his usual cheerful demeanor gone. He spoke rapidly.
“Madam, there’s a very urgent matter in the Intelligence Department, and only Sir Nirua can handle it, so may I take him with me?”
“What?”
It took a moment to process his rapid-fire speech.

I gestured my permission, and Rick practically scooped Nirua up and carried him out of the room. I watched them bow and hurry away.
The door slammed shut. I buried my face in my hands.

I narrowed my eyes and looked up at him. The reason everyone in Argenta was desperately trying to hide their condition was obvious.

“I knew, but I told them to keep it a secret…”
Because he thought I’d be embarrassed. He cupped my face in his hands, the warmth from my flushed skin mingling with his. Just like last night. He caressed my ear and whispered.
