Chapter 49.1

“Cassel is undeniably good-looking.”

Dreikan thought back to Cassel’s academy days. Even though Dreikan considered himself quite attractive, standing next to Cassel always made him feel like just an ordinary person.

“Still, he never dated anyone.”

“Hm, really?”

When Leilia asked seriously, Cassel furrowed his brow.

“Didn’t you already know that?”

“Well, we never talked about first love.”

“First love?”

Dreikan echoed her words with curiosity.

“I heard Cassel had a first love back then.”

Leilia spoke softly.

“Do you know anything about it?”

At her question, Cassel quietly poured wine into his glass. Without a word, he handed the glass to Dreikan, who accepted it and drank without hesitation.

“I’m not sure. I’ve seen Cassel turn down countless confessions from women, but a first love…”

Dreikan shook his head.

“If it had been known, it would have caused a huge commotion.”

“Hmm.”

“Cassel’s popularity was beyond imagination.”

Leilia nodded in agreement.

“Despite being a commoner without a surname and an illegitimate child, he lived a life more lavish than anyone else. On top of that, he was incredibly handsome and always at the top of his class.”

Dreikan bit his lip slightly.

“I was really jealous of him too.”

He admitted lightly, taking another sip of wine. Cassel handed him some snacks without a word.

“But you’re honorable.”

As he uttered simply, Dreikan narrowed his eyes for a moment and stared at him.

“You think I’m honorable?”

“I’ve heard that about you, too.”

Had the two of them been talking about things like this before he arrived?

“So, I heard that Cassel recommended you as an aide to Lord Zitlar.”

Leilia said, surprising Dreikan.

“My husband has a thing for honorable people.”

She smiled softly, her affectionate gaze resting on her husband.

“Hmm.”

Dreikan felt his ears heat up. To think he had become Zitlar’s aide because of Cassel’s recommendation… this was the first he’d heard of it.

“So, how did you two end up so close?”

Now, it was time to hear their love story.

“Well, he’s my husband.”

“Because she’s my wife.”

They answered in unison.

“My wife waited for me while I was at war. That alone was enough.”

Cassel’s calm voice carried a certain weight as Leilia’s ears turned bright red.

“I just did what anyone would do.”

“Well, not everyone would.”

It was true. Princes who went to war usually sought new wives, but even knowing that, Leilia still waited for him.

“Sometimes, I even resent Cassel.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s too exceptional.”

Dreikan said this while looking at Cassel.

“But you never stooped to using underhanded tactics to beat me.”

At Cassel’s comment, he frowned slightly.

“Resorting to those is the absolute worst.”

“You’re a good friend just the way you are.”

“Still, it’s not a feeling I want to experience too often.”

Dreikan responded, shaking his head after speaking.

The two continued their conversation as they drank. When Leilia, who couldn’t handle alcohol well, finally succumbed to drowsiness, Cassel stood and gently helped her to the bedroom.

Left alone, Dreikan stared at the empty glass before finishing the rest of the wine in silence.

Just as he thought about tidying up, Cassel returned, leaning casually against the door and observing him quietly for a moment.

“How is Arisel?”

Arisel was Dreikan’s wife.

“She’s doing well.”

Dreikan replied as his thoughts drifted to what Leilia had said earlier.

“I heard you recommended me to Lord Zitlar. What was the reason for that?”

“Because you’re capable.”

“Hmm.”

He studied Cassel silently for a moment.

“Arisel’s family didn’t accept me at first, but after I became Lord Zitlar’s aide, they finally approved our marriage.”

He shrugged his shoulders.

“Thank you.”

Dreikan spoke in an even tone, and Cassel responded with a faint smile.

“I recommended you because you’re this kind of person. You may envy me, but you strive to live with an upright heart, and I respect you for it.”

“That’s exactly why you’re so irritating. If you had a few flaws, it’d be less infuriating.”

Though the comment was bold, Cassel simply listened quietly.

That was the kind of friendship they shared.

“Lord Zitlar asked you to come visit.”

“Let him know I’ll stop by sometime.”

“Understood.”

The two finished another bottle of wine before calling it a night.

Leilia quietly rose and walked into the garden.

Cassel had left for a while, mentioning he was going to train with his subordinates. As she wandered through the garden, she noticed Dreikan standing still, his gaze fixed on some flowers.

“Good morning.”

Dreikan returned her greeting.

“The flowers are beautiful.”

He smiled quietly after saying that.

“They remind me of my wife.”

“Lady Arisel?”

“My wife was very fond of His Highness Cassel.”

After speaking, he shrugged his shoulders slightly.

“I doubt anyone knew that His Highness Cassel had someone he loved back then.”

Then, he turned his gaze to Leilia.

“But as I think about it, something comes to mind.”

‘What was he going to say?’
